Cool Conversation Starters
If you need something interesting to talk about at your holiday get-together (before the football games start,) whip out a few of these Labor Day fun facts to impress your guests with.

  • Labor Day was approved as an official national holiday on June 28, 1894, to be held the 1st Monday of each September.
  • The 1st Labor Day parade took place before that on September 5, 1882 in New York City. Lots of states picked up the practice afterwards, which prompted the bill that made it a national holiday.
  • Canada also celebrates their "Labour" Day on the 1st Monday in September, but more than 80 other countries celebrate on May 1 for "International Workers Day" instead.
  • Many retailers will tell you that this is the 2nd largest sales weekend of the year, with only Black Friday beating it out.
  • It's the 3rd most popular holiday for BBQ, following Memorial Day at #2 and the 4th of July at #1. (Doesn't everyone eat BBQ for every holiday?)
However, and wherever, you decide to celebrate your Labor Day weekend, just know that Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is here for you. Stay safe, have fun, and most importantly, don't miss kickoff!

Rave Reviews for Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

From time to time, we like to share some of the wonderful things that our customers have said about their visit to our Des Moines BBQ restaurant. It gives those of you that have not had the chance to try our delicious dishes the unbiased opinions of people that don't work here, so you aren't just taking our word for it. Here are some of the latest reviews that Wobbly Boots Roadhouse has received.

"We had a family dinner with 8. Ordered from apps to ribs, meatloaf, burnt ends, and sandwiches. Service was very good. We rated Wobbly over Jethros . The menu was diverse with something for everyone."
-samjwells, TripAdvisor review

"We were a big group in town with our kids for a baseball tournament. Had reservations for 6:30 p.m. We were also a loud group and the staff put up with us and the cheers from the kids while they watched the Cubs game  Our waitress was great! She took good care of us and seemed unfazed with all of the confusion since the kids all sat together, then moms on one end of our tables and dads on the other end. The food was awesome as well. We would definitely eat here again. Thanks!"
-Mike Vicki Kuper, Facebook review

"The "burnt ends" were as good as in Texas. The price was right. The serving could have fed two adults."
-Lo S, TripAdvisor review

"Fantastic!!! Quick, good service, nice portions and HOT food! Huge variety and tasted great. No need for extra sauce, or sauce at all. Priced reasonably also. We will be back"
-Shelana L, Yelp review

"Great food. The Crab Rangoon Flatbread is awesome. Also their caramel hot cider alcoholic drink is awesome. Definitely be back there again"
-Katie R. Fenton, Zomato review

"Amazing food!! BBQ is very good and atmosphere is even better!"
-Heidi Fisher Sickerson, Facebook review

"We really enjoyed this place!! We had a great server Karra (probably spelled wrong) and to boot (no pun intended) the food was incredible!! There were 5 of us and we were shocked at how quickly our food arrived and every one of us completely cleaned our plates!!! Wish we had been in town more than one night to eat there again!!!"
-Rhonda Kimerling, Facebook review

"The food was all delicious. The burnt ends sandwich was delicious- one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The meat is so tender. Fries and beans were good too."
-Kimberly M, TripAdvisor review

"I'm not good at trying new places so I just decided to go for it. I'm also a little bit picky. My burger was cooked to request and I was only able to eat half so it might be nice to share. The reason you would want to share is so you can eat all the onion rings. Big and crispy and perfect. I left lots of napkins on the table, my fingers were finger licking good. All condiments and extra napkins are already on the table and wait staff was timely and not in my face.Since it was my first time I wasn't prepared for the size of the bar. It's half of the restaurant with TV screens everywhere. It would be a great place to watch a game and have a bite to eat."
-Elyse S, Yelp review

"First time for us. Quality food and service. We arrived at 6:15 pm on a Saturday night and thought for sure we would have to wait to be seated, no waiting got right in. Friendly greeting at the door and manager came around to check on us. Delicious smoked meat. Prime rib melts in your mouth. My husband had the 3 meat meal and they really pile on the meat. It made enough for two meals. Casual dining with great food and service. Definitely will be back again."
-Nancy Hildreth Townsend, Facebook review

"Awesome place, people and one heck of a menu!!!! Had a blast."
-Todd Sanders, Facebook review

Admit It... BBQ Makes You HAPPY!!!

August is halfway over, and we just discovered that we are in the midst of "Admit You're Happy Month." Well, we thought about it, and yes, we are very happy here at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant. As a matter of fact, we looked around the room, and the customers at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive looked pretty darn happy too. We're sure it has something to do with the BBQ! Here is why we believe a trip to the Boot for a big, delicious plate of hickory-smoked deliciousness makes a person so happy.

The Smell
All it takes is opening the front doors of our family friendly restaurant in Des Moines and the glorious scent of hickory smoke puts a smile on your face before you even realize it's there! Once you shake yourself back to reality, you may notice the other scents of the various menu items being served around the room. Now that happiness turns into excitement about getting seated and ordering your own delicious-smelling dish.

The Taste
Next comes that glorious, mouthwatering flavor! Underneath, there's the distinct taste of the hickory smoke that our meats are slow-cooked in for hours. If you've decided to have yours served "wet" (and we highly suggest that you do) you've got the added flavor of our house-made, secret recipe BBQ sauce too. It only takes a few bites to turn your grin into a big BBQ-coated smile!
The Choices
Our hickory-smoked meats alone give you all kinds of choices, allowing you to try something different each time that you visit. Another option is to bring a big group of people to Wobbly Boots BBQ with you, order all of our smoked meats at once, and share with the table. You get to choose from: Hand-Pulled Pork, 100% White Meat Turkey Breast, Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage, Applewood Smoked Pit Ham, Tender Smoked Brisket, and our house-favorite Brisket Burnt Ends. Once you've tried all of that, we've also got a great big menu filled with even more options that are equally as amazing. So many choices!

The Boot is a perfect place to bring the entire family or meet up with a great big group of friends. The atmosphere is inviting, and the staff here is friendly and welcoming. You can simply enjoy a nice dinner together any night of the week, or you can gather for a special occasion and celebrate. We've got 17 TVs throughout the restaurant, so it's also the best place to watch sports in Des Moines every time your favorite team plays. (Even if its not your favorite team, it's still fun to watch!)

It Pairs Great With Beer
They don't call it "Happy Hour" for nothing! Every Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm we host the best Happy Hour in Des Moines with awesome specials on mixed drinks and beer. You'll find great deals on your drinks during many of the games, too. We have a full bar so that we can mix up all of your favorite cocktails, and in addition to the large variety of bottled beers we carry, there are 18 beers on tap, including many of the best Iowa craft brews. Belly up to the bar, place your order, and maybe even make a few new happy friends while you're there.

Is Flatbread Different From Pizza?

Last week our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse blog posed the question, "Is a wrap a sandwich?" This week we were curious about another one of our menu items that could be called by another name. Are the delicious flatbreads we serve at our family friendly restaurant in Des Moines considered pizza, or are they something else entirely?

As we told you last week, sandwiches and wraps have differing definitions, so technically there is a a difference between the two. Even though many people would love to argue that pizzas and flatbreads are not the same food, none of the research that we uncovered proved that as a fact. While toppings and types of crusts may differ, they actually are considered a similar dish.

Pizza is defined as a yeasted flatbread typically topped with tomato sauce and cheese and baked in an oven, commonly also topped with meats, vegetables, and condiments.

Flatbread "pizza" is generally made on a thinner, crispier crust using lighter toppings and sauce, most often not a tomato sauce.

So... those findings were a bit anti-climactic. Fortunately, the toppings we offer on our Flatbreads at Wobbly Boots BBQ are exciting enough to titillate any taste bud! Check out the amazing flavors we've created especially for you.

BIG CITY FLATBREADS

Spin-Art-Chicken
Our creamy homemade Spinach Artichoke Dip spread out evenly on our flat-bread pizza crust, topped with mozzarella & Provel cheeses, smoked chicken breast and diced tomatoes. Delicious and Delightful!

BBQ Chicken
Our homemade BBQ sauce spread over our flatbread pizza crust, topped with smoked chicken breast, red onion, tomato, and mozzarella & Provel cheeses. Outstanding Flavor!!

B-L-T
We start with our thin flatbread pizza crust, spread our homemade cheese sauce, add mozzarella & Provel cheeses, and top with smoked ham, bacon crumbles, lettuce, & tomatoes, all drizzled with ranch dressing.

Crab Rangoon
Wobbly Boots' own crab rangoon filling slathered on our flatbread pizza crust, topped with mozzarella & Provel cheeses, and finished with fried won tons and a sweet chili drizzle. A Customer Favorite!

There you go! When you bring the family to our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, you can have your "pizza," and your BBQ too! We specialize in the most mouthwatering, hickory-smoked BBQ in the Midwest, but our diverse menu offers something tasty for everyone in the family. The next time you visit Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, give one of these delicious flatbreads a try, either as your meal or to share as a yummy appetizer with the rest of the table. We know you're going to love them, and after you've fallen for those savory flavors, we've got a lot more dishes for you to try next.

Is A Wrap A Sandwich?

Sometimes chefs like to change things up a little, taking a classic dish and switching one small thing to make it new and different. The creative cooks in the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines do this with the amazing rubs and spices we season our meats with, and the incredible ingredients we use to make up that amazing house-made BBQ sauce we're so proud of. The tiny details at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive make our food unique and unforgettable.

It isn't always a chef, though. Every once in a while dish is born out of necessity rather than experimentation. In these cases, an ingredient was not available, so a person had to think quickly and use what was on hand. One great example is the evolution of the sandwich into a wrap. Wraps seem like a sandwich, but technically they aren't.

Who invented the wrap?
The sandwich, which is made up of food served between two slices of bread, was made popular by John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich. Wraps gained popularity in the United States in the 1990's. Rather than two slices of bread, instead ingredients are served on one piece of flatbread, generally a tortilla, and rolled up.

Wraps may have been invented in California by the "I Love Juicy" chain in the early 1980's to resemble a Tex-Mex burrito. The OVO Bistro in New York City introduced its wrap, "The King Edward," in 1990.

Later, in the mid-1990's, the Bobby Valentine Sports Gallery Cafe in Stamford, Connecticut declared that they invented the wrap. As the story goes, a waitress at the restaurant served a "wrap" to the customer because they had run out of bread. When asked about the other stories of who invented the wrap, Valentine was quoted as saying, "Well, that's legend and folklore, but until somebody disputes me or comes up with a better story, I'll say I invented the wrap."

Wobbly Wraps
We may not have invented it, but we have perfected it! All of our wraps are served with your choice of one side dish, or you may substitute a garden salad, a cup of soup, a half order of onion rings or a half order of Texas fries for a small additional charge.

The Wrangler

A wheat tortilla stuffed with three of our signature items: pulled pork, legendary baked beans & creamy coleslaw. We then place it on our grill and toast the tortilla, blending all three flavors, which makes one incredible WRAP!

Honey Mustard Chicken
Our charbroiled chicken breast cooked perfectly with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes , mozzarella-Provel cheese & our house-made honey mustard dressing, served in a warm wheat tortilla. Delicious!

Turkey Bacon Ranch
The original Wobbly Boots' wrap! Lightly grilled turkey breast served in a warm tomato basil tortilla, stuffed full of bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar-jack cheese & ranch dressing.

Buffalo Chicken Strip

Our homemade chicken strips fried to golden perfection, tossed in our homemade buffalo sauce, with lettuce, tomato, cheddar-jack cheese and ranch dressing, served in a warm wheat tortilla.

Turkey Avocado

Hickory smoked 100% breast of turkey served in a warm tomato basil tortilla with avocado, avocado mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and cheddar-jack cheese.

Grilled Shrimp
Grilled jumbo shrimp with bacon, lettuce, tomato & cheddar-jack cheese all wrapped up in a warm tomato basil tortilla.

Whether you want to put sandwiches and wraps into the same category or keep them separated, just know that no matter which one you choose to order from the Wobbly Boots BBQ menu, it will always be stuffed full of deliciousness! Do you have a preference between 2 slices of bread or 1 single tortilla to contain your lunch or dinner? We'd love to know what you think. Next week our family friendly BBQ restaurant in Des Moines will be asking, "Is flatbread different from pizza?" Check back and find out!
