Historical Facts About Memorial Day

You may be making plans to take advantage of your 3-day weekend by ordering up some of the best BBQ in Des Moines and gathering with friends for a picnic. Some even pack up and head out of town since they have an extra day off of work.

Memorial Weekend has become the starting point for the summer vacation season, but it also has a deeper meaning than that. Memorial Day is a federal holiday set aside every year to honor and remember all of the soldiers that are no longer with us that fought for our country. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse found a few interesting facts about this important holiday.

  • This holiday actually started out being called Decoration Day. In the 1880's, surviving soldiers of the Civil War honored their fallen comrades by decorating their graves with flags and flowers.

  • In 1882, folks began calling the day Memorial Day, but that name change didn't become legal until 1967.

  • May 30 was the official day to celebrate for many years. Congress decided that some holidays should always fall on a Monday to allow a 3-day weekend. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act came into effect, moving Memorial Day to the last Monday of May.

  • A wonderful tradition that few know about, which Congress made a law in 2000, is an official moment of remembrance. President Bill Clinton signed the National Moment of Remembrance Act which states that all Americans must pause at 3 pm, local time, and take that moment to remember the brave men and women that fought for our freedom.

  • American flags are flown at half-staff on this holiday, but not all day. It is tradition to fly them at half-staff until noon, but then immediately raise them to full-staff until sunset. We spend part of the day remembering the fallen, and the rest of the day enjoying the freedoms that they helped us to have.

We hope that everyone is able to enjoy a wonderful Memorial Weekend with your family and friends. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is here if you want to stop by and enjoy part of it with us. Holidays are always better when you celebrate them with the best BBQ in Des Moines
