The Early History of Our Modern Smoked Meatloaf

Fall is the perfect time to cozy up and enjoy some tasty, Southern comfort food. The smoked meatloaf on our Des Moines BBQ restaurant menu is a popular item around here. It's a dish that nearly everyone has fond memories of from childhood, but we put our own Wobbly Boots Roadhouse twist on it by preparing it in the smoker.

Meatloaf's Long History
The origin of this delicious loaf of meat dates back as early as 5th century Rome. The recipe found in one of their ancient cookbooks was made my mixing chopped meat, bread, and wine. Meatloaf is also a traditional dish of Germany, Scandinavia, and Belgium, and it has been linked as a "cousin" of the Dutch meatball.

The origin of modern-day American meatloaf comes from a dish called "scrapple." German-Americans in Pennsylvania made this by combining leftover pork scraps and trimmings with cornmeal and other seasonings. This particular recipe was pan-fried before being served.

The meatloaf of today didn't begin showing up in cookbooks until the late 19th century. It was a very popular dish during the Great Depression because it gave families the ability to stretch inexpensive meats into a large meal. Lots of filler ingredients could be added to make it serve more people, and many housewives went so far as to create "meatless" meatloaves.

Our Smoked Meatloaf
Wobbly Boots Roadhouse's homemade meatloaf can be found on our Southern Comfort Foods section of the menu, along with our Smoked Turkey Dinner, Prime Rib Hot Beef, and Chicken Fried Chicken. The term "comfort food" is used to describe dishes that are fairly simple to prepare and often has some type of nostalgia associated to it for the diner. You know, like something that Mom or Grandma used to make.

We take this "simple" dish and make it even easier for you by doing all of the prep work and cooking, but we add something extra that you probably don't do at home. We slow roast this meatloaf in our hickory smoker. That flavor adds another level of amazing to this savory food. Just ask our customers!

"I am not going to lie to you. Whoever came up with the idea of smoked meatloaf deserves a statue somewhere in their honor. This place does it better than most! Good sized portions of great tasting meat with just the right amount of smokiness made it a perfect dinner. Good selection of local beer on tap to wash it down. Guy next to me had the burnt ends which smelled and looked very good too...he wouldn't take his eyes off them for long enough to steal one so I guess I'll have to come back another time. Sean kept my beer glass full.

To make the entire experience of dining on our smoked meatloaf even better, we pair it with our home-style smashed potatoes & beef gravy and green beans. That's a plate that's going to hit the spot just right on a chilly, fall day!
