The Surprising Health Benefits of Enjoying a Beer!

Friday, April 7, 2017 is designated as both National Beer Day AND World Health Day. What does Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive do with this type of information? Well, we research to find out if there are any health benefits tied to a big, frosty brew. You're all in luck too, because beer does have a few of those, and your favorite bar in Des Moines has listed them for you below.

National Beer Day
For over 13 years, beginning in 1920, Prohibition was enforced. This meant that it was illegal to buy or sell beer and alcohol in the United States. In March of 1933, President Franklin d. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law, meaning that U.S. residents could once again legally enjoy a drink.

Even though signed in March, the new law did not go into affect until April 7 of that year, which then became known as National Beer Day. Fun fact: the day before, April 6, is often referred to as New Beer's Eve because people were so excited about getting the chance to legally purchase a beer, they lined up outside their favorite breweries and pubs the night before!

World Health Day
This holiday is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global health awareness day. April 7 marks the founding of WHO, and they use it as an opportunity to draw worldwide attention to the important subject of global health. Topics of both mental and physical health are addressed, covering a variety of subjects.

Health Benefits of Beer
Enjoyed in moderation, beer actually has quite a few health benefits. If you stick to no more than 1-2 glasses a day, the following facts may be true for you.
  • Beer has a thinning effect on blood which can prevent the formation of clots, and the Vitamin B-6 from it helps to prevent build-up in the arteries, making it good for your cardiovascular health.
  • It can boost your level of "good cholesterol" by 10%-20%, helping to prevent coronary disease.
  • The antioxidant content of beer is equal to that of wine, and beer has more protein and Vitamin B than wine.
  • When compared to regular wine and cocktail drinkers, regular beer drinkers were found to have the lower blood pressure.
  • The silicon present in beer helps to increase bone density and protect your bones against osteoporosis. In one particular study, drinking 1-2 beers a day showed an increase in bone density for 4.5%. Be aware though, that people drinking 3+ brews a day actually lowered their bone density up to 5.2%.
  • Beer, especially the dark varieties, are a good source of soluble fiber. This is great for the digestive system.
  • Also a rich source of magnesium, it can aid in the prevention of kidney stones.
  • Beer is both high in potassium and low in sodium.
  • Age slower with beer! It increases the potency and impact of Vitamin E, which happens to be a major antioxidant that maintains healthy skin and slows the aging process.
  • In one Spanish study, researchers asked people to exercise until their body temperature reached 104 degrees. They then had some drink a beer and others drink water. The beer drinkers turned out to be slightly more hydrated.

Local Brew on Tap: Boone Valley Brewing Company

When you are in the mood for the best beer in Des Moines, make your way on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.  Our 18 taps give you lots of choices, and we are proud to feature our favorite local Iowa breweries in that selection.  Today we have decided to put the spotlight on the Boone Valley Brewing Company.

It all started with a kit.

What began as merely a fun notion to make beer from a kit soon turned into a passion for brewing. The beer from the kit turned out good, but wasn't nearly enough of a challenge for Rick, Jon, and Ron. These fellas spent many hours in the garage improving upon their brew-master skills.

Life's obligations drew Jon and Ron away from the task, but Rick simply couldn't give it up. Craving the honest opinions of those outside of his circle of friends, Rick began entering several competitions throughout Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It soon became obvious that he knows what he is doing due to the several awards that were earned along the way.

A true beer lover.

Fellow brewers fondly refer to Rick as the "Willie Wonka of Beers" and the "Phantom Brewer." His favorite subject to discuss with fellow beer-lovers is the art of making beer. Rick hasn't forgotten how it all began in a garage with close friends, and he loves to encourage other home-brewers with advice from his own experience.

Roxie Irish Red

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is thrilled to be able to include Boone Valley Brewing Company among our local beer options. Right now our bar has the Roxie Irish Red on tap.

Their version of an Irish Red Ale is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas. A medium-bodied 5.5% ABV beer, it is very easy to drink and has a clean finish. An excellent choice for washing down the best BBQ in Des Moines

An Iowa Favorite - Peace Tree Brewing Co.

The best bar near Des Moines loves to feature Iowa breweries in our selection of 18 beers on tap.  One of these home-state selections is Peace Tree Brewing Co. out of Knoxville, Iowa.  Wobbly Boots BBQ would like to introduce you to the handcrafted, full-flavored brewhouse that is very passionate about what they create.

Their name, Peace Tree, comes from the historic grand sycamore that grew near the town of Red Rock.  Today, that town is covered by Lake Red Rock.  In the 1960's, Red Rock Dam was built, surrounding the then 500 year old tree.  Ever since that time the Peace Tree has been nobly rising out of those waters.

Originally the Peace Tree was a meeting place for many generations of Native Americans, and later became a meeting place for fur traders as well.  Treaties were negotiated here, and some say that it marks the Red Rock line.  Drawing from this past tradition, the Peace Tree Brewing Co. hopes that the beer made under the Peace Tree label will, "be shared with friends and strangers alike and act as a catalyst for conversations, new friendships and important agreements – in line with the lore of the Peace Tree of Red Rock."

A former Nash Rambler car dealership has been the home of Peace Tree Brewing Co. since 2009.  Within a month of their March, 2010 grand opening, they were producing and bottling their very own beers and hand-delivering them all over Iowa.  Today they have doubled in size and production, and even branched out into Nebraska.

The names of their beers come from memories and places in their past that have special meaning, along with special places in the community and our great state of Iowa.  The following three can be found all over the state year-round.

Blonde Fatale

This Belgian-style Blonde Ale is surprisingly smooth.  It is hopped with Styrian Golding and Celeia, giving it a medium aroma with a crisp, refreshing bite.  Hints of a fruity complexity come from the Belgian yeast.  It is 8.5% ABV.

Red Rambler

The deep red color and malty flavor of this beer is a popular one in the tap room.  It is named in honor of the Nash Rambler car dealership that used to inhabit the building.  Three varieties of hops balance out the malt character of this 5.8% ABV brew.

No Coast IPA

Loads of hop flavor and tons of bitterness describe this big American IPA.  Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops are present with big piney and citrus notes.  Its golden color comes from the variety of pale malts that are used to make it.  It is 7.25% ABV.

Peace Tree Brewing Co. currently has 11 other varieties listed on their taproom website, including some delicious seasonal choices.  Stop in to your favorite BBQ restaurant near Des Moines and see which of these incredible beers that we are featuring this month.  Nothing goes better with Wobbly Boots BBQ and Iowa football than a good ol' Iowa-brewed beer!
