1. The very first Labor Day parade took place in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882. The Central Labor Union organized it to honor their workers with a fun festival that they could enjoy with their families.
2. With many states starting to recognize the holiday, a bill to make Labor Day a legal holiday on the first Monday of each September was approved June 28, 1894.
3. Many Americans were required to work 12-hour days, sometimes 7 days a week during the 19th century! The Adamson Act was passed on September 3, 1916 declaring that a work day could be no longer that 8 hours.
4. Canada also celebrates their Labour Day on the first Monday of each September, but more than 80 other countries celebrate what they call International Worker's Day on May 1.
5. Some in the retail industry claim that Labor Day weekend is the 2nd largest sales weekend of the year, beaten out by Black Friday.
6. College football chooses this weekend to kick off their season. (Yay!) The NFL won't be too far behind.
7. This is the 3rd most popular holiday for BBQ! It follows Memorial Day at #2 and the 4th of July at #1.
