Party Thursday - Rose Bowl Friday - Happy New Year!

Not only do you have the opportunity to celebrate the end of 2015 with an unbelievable party at your favorite BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, but you can also join us to begin 2016 watching the amazing Iowa Hawkeyes play in the Rose Bowl.  It's looking like one pretty incredible early weekend here at the Boot.

MUSIC
First of all, we'll begin Thursday with the best New Year's Eve party in Des Moines.  The 4-piece band, Past Vertical, will be rocking our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse stage from 9 pm - 1 am, and there is absolutely NO COVER CHARGE to enjoy them!  Our marvelous bartenders will keep your drinks full all night long, and at midnight we will all share a free champagne toast.

FOOD
In addition to all of the drinking and dancing, we are featuring a special New Year's Eve menu.  The Wobbly Boots kitchen will be offering up some delicious meals that we don't normally make.  You will get your choice of an entree, soup or salad, and any two of our incredible signature side dishes, all for only $22.99.

FOOTBALL
That party will keep going until the band stops playing at 1 am.  Make sure that you go straight home to get plenty of rest so that you can come back in for the Rose Bowl game at 4 pm on Friday, January 1!  The Boot will be packed full of Hawkeye fans, cheering on our boys as they face the Stanford Cardinals.  The sooner you reserve your table, the better your seat.

This will be the Hawkeyes 6th Rose Bowl appearance, having played in 1957,1959, 1982, 1986, and 1991.  In the very first Rose Bowl in 1902, the University of Michigan beat the Stanford Cardinals.  Here's hoping they take a loss in the 2016 Rose Bowl too!

During the game we will be offering $5 appetizer specials and $3 tall boys. Delicious food, ice cold beer, and an amazing game.  What a way to start a new year!

Winterize Your BBQ Grill Properly

With winter coming, if you aren't the type that enjoys braving the snow to barbecue, it's nearly time to  pack your grill away for the season.  You won't miss the delicious flavor though, because the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines is here to serve up delicious, hickory-smoked flavor to you all year long.  Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is set up so you won't have to go without your favorite foods over the snowy winter.

There are a few important things you should take care of before you store your own grill for the season.  Here are a few basic instructions that should work for any grill.

Clean the inside.

Start by firing up your grill on maximum heat and let it run for 15-20 minutes. After you turn it off and while the grill is still hot, use a wire grill brush to scrape off any food that hasn't already burned away.  It will be nice and charred, making it easy to remove.  If it's a charcoal grill, remove an leftover ashes.  You can use soapy water or oven cleaner once the grill cools down to clean off the parts inside.  (Make sure to check the owner manual so that you don't use any cleaner that will damage your particular grill.)  Take it all apart, removing any grilling plates, flame shields, grease tray, etc..., clean them thoroughly, and rinse everything well.  Don't forget to wash the inside of the lid where carbon monoxide has built up and left residue.

Clean the outside.

While those parts are drying, use soapy water to clean the outside surfaces. Thoroughly wash off all knobs, handles, etc...  Don't forget the propane tank on gas grills too.  Be wary if you use any type of abrasive pad.  Test it on a small section of the grill's surface first to make sure that you won't be damaging the finish.  Clean the grill cover as well.  If you find any rips or holes, buy a new one. It's a lot cheaper to buy a new cover now than to replace a damaged grill next year.  If repairs are need to the grill itself, take care of them now so that it's ready to go right away next year.

Test the grill.

If you have taken your grill apart to clean every nook and cranny, turn it back on to make sure that it has been reassembled correctly.  Leaving it on for about 10 minutes will guarantee that the inside is nice and dry for storage.

Store it properly.

In the case of gas grills, ALWAYS remove the propane tank.  Store it in a well-ventilated area.  Before placing your cover back over the grill, be positive that it is completely dry.  The very best way to store your grill for winter is to house it inside a dry location like a garage or storage shed.  If this isn't possible, try to at least keep it in a covered area, and be sure that the grill cover is properly in place.

Head to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse!

You don't have to be sad about packing away your gill for the season.  Jump in the car and head on over to the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines.  It's cozy and warm here, and you can sit back and enjoy our award-winning BBQ without any work on your part.  We'll even clean up when you're done.  Wobbly Boots Roadhouse will be here welcoming you with open arms and tasty BBQ all winter long.  We bet you like it so much you'll visit us often during grilling season too.

Hickory Wood Makes the Tastiest Smoked Meats

Smoking meats is described as "the process of flavoring, cooking, or preserving food by exposing it to smoke from burning or smoldering material, most often wood."  That makes it sound complicated, but the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines knows all about this delicious process.  On any given day you will find a big, mouth-watering batch of meats being smoked right here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, BBQ, Des Moines, Clive IA

People have been smoking meats as far back as the time of primitive cavemen. Meat was often hung up to dry to make it last longer, but they began noticing that the meat hung in areas where it was exposed to smoke had a better flavor, was better preserved, and a lot less dried out.  An amazing new taste was born!

Today there is less need to preserve food since modern-day appliances allow us to keep it fresh and it is readily available in every grocery store and restaurant. Now smoking is less about preserving the meat and more about the unique and incredible flavor that the process provides.

A variety of things can be used to smoke with, but wood seems to produce the tastiest meats.  There are also a lot of different woods that can be used:  mesquite, alder, oak, pecan, maple... but Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is partial to hickory.

Hickory has a very rich and full-bodied flavor that complements every meat that we serve.  This isn't necessarily a wood for beginners to start out with.  It is a strong flavor that can sometimes be overwhelming when used alone, but we're not beginners!  Our cooks know exactly how low and slow to smoke our meats so that they come out perfectly every time.  They start out by generously coating the meats with our special dry rub, then finish it off with our incredible house-recipe sauce.

We not only love eating hickory-smoked meat here, but we love smoking just about every piece of meat we get our hands on.  This is a special treat that most people don't take the time to perfect on their own at home.  Your choices include:

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, BBQ, Des Moines, Clive IA

  • Beef Brisket

  • Shaved Prime Rib

  • Pork
  • Pit Ham

  • Polish Sausage
  • Meatloaf
  • Ribs
  • Chicken
  • Bacon

What are you waiting for?  You've got a lot of different deliciously smoked meats to try at the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines.  Our menu offers everything above served up in a few different ways, along with the best-tasting home style side dishes you've ever had.  Start deciding now which one (or two, or three...) you will start with the next time you visit Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

A Few Iowa Hawkeyes Football Facts

If you live in Iowa, you can't help but be a fan of the good old Black & Gold!  The Iowa Hawkeyes are a state treasure, bringing excitement to their fans every week during football season.  The best place to watch the game in Des Moines is right here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.  The whole place is full of fans cheering together for the best team in college football.

Die hard Hawkeyes fans most likely already know everything written below, but if you only recently fell in love with this incredible team, you need to read on. These basic facts and bit of history are necessary information for any discussion involving Iowa football.  Once you get these basic facts into your brain, then you can work on learning the stats!

The Beginning

Even though football was played in various forms before this, 1889 was the year that the University of Iowa officially became a varsity football team.  Their first undefeated season happened the following year in 1899.  This impressive year earned an invitation to join the Western Conference, which is currently know as the Big Ten.  Another undefeated season followed in 1900.  This incredible Iowa football team came right out of the gate at the top of their game.

The Stadium

The Hawkeyes "Iowa Stadium" opened in 1929.  Before that, all of the games had been played at Iowa Field.  This stadium was renamed in 1972 to what we currently know it as, "Kinnick Stadium."

The new name honors the only Heisman trophy winner in the school's history, Nile Kinnick.  He won that distinguished award in 1939.  While he is the only Hawkeye to claim that honor, the team can boast four Heisman trophy runner-ups.

The Mascot

Every Iowa Hawkeyes fan recognizes our beloved mascot, Herky the Hawkeye, but are you aware that he is named after a Greek God?  Herky is actually short for Hercules.  He was first drawn as a cartoon in 1948, and his first appearance at a sporting event came eleven years later in 1959.

"Hawkeye" is a term from the book "The Last of the Mohicans."  Someone used it in its plural form to describe the people of Iowa, and the University of Iowa decided to use the name for their athletic teams.

The Fight Songs

There are certain songs that you will hear at every Iowa Hawkeyes game. The official fight song is the "Iowa Fight Song."  "On Iowa" is the school song, and lastly "Roll Away Iowa" is their third fight song.  The best one by far to hear at a game, though,  is the "Im Himmel gibt's kein Bier" Polka, because this is the song played after every Hawkeye victory.  The translation of that title is actually, "In Heaven There Is No Beer."  (If that's the case, it's a good thing we keep lots of it hand hand here at Wobbly Boots!)

The 2015-16 Season

Iowa's head football coach, Kirk Firentz, is currently coaching his 17th Hawkeye season.  He sure seems to be doing something right, because they are on quite a winning streak!  So far this year, our amazing team is undefeated!  Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is the best place in Iowa (aside from Kinnick Stadium, of course) to cheer on the Hawkeyes and watch them keep winning all season long.

Top 10 Favorite Thanksgiving Foods

When someone says the word "Thanksgiving," certain foods immediately pop into your head. It may be different for everyone, but most likely very similar. Your favorite BBQ restaurant in Des Moines did a little research, and these are the ones that popped up again and again.

TURKEY

Most definitely the star of the show, it's rare to find a Thanksgiving dinner table without a turkey on it.  It's a great main dish for feeding a lot of hungry people. You can find all kinds of yummy recipes for the leftovers too.

DINNER ROLLS

It's hard to imagine a great big meal without some hot, buttery rolls to go along with it.  There's really not a lot to say about them other than they better be somewhere on the table.

SWEET POTATOES

Most people either love or hate this dish.  They can be baked, mashed, or cooked into a casserole.  It doesn't truly feel like Thanksgiving until you toast some marshmallows on top of these potatoes.  A combo of cinnamon and sugar is also great to top them with.

CRANBERRY SAUCE

Once again, another dish you either love or hate.  Often you will see a can-shaped blob of this stuff in a bowl, but they're actually pretty simple to prepare fresh, and a lot tastier.

GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE

French fried onions are nearly impossible to keep on the grocery shelves this time of year.  If you spot them in someone's cart, most likely they will be sitting next to some green beans and cream of mushroom soup.  The person that came up with this side dish has made many hungry people very happy over the years.

STUFFING

A true Thanksgiving cook will go all the way and cook the stuffing inside the turkey.  Many people choose to go the easy route and buy a box of Stove Top. Either way that you do it, turkey always tastes better followed by a bite of this side dish.

PUMPKIN PIE

A big ol' slice of pumpkin pie topped with a mountain of whipped cream is the perfect end to a Thanksgiving meal, or a great snack for hours later if you forgot to leave room for dessert.

MASHED POTATOES

These are always delicious, and especially important to have on the table if you are one of those people that hate sweet potatoes.  Mashed potatoes really don't taste their absolute best without the next item on the list.

GRAVY

Gravy not only tastes great on mashed potatoes, but it tastes amazing over the turkey too.  True gravy lovers may even be seen drizzling it over their entire Thanksgiving plate!

HAM

Ham is popular for Thanksgiving in families that have members that don't particularly like turkey.  As with turkey, it's a great main dish that can be prepared for a large number of people.  Also, it's great for sandwich-making along with the leftover turkey for lunch on Black Friday.

We have a great suggestion for making your Thanksgiving turkey or ham taste even better.  Try it with a bit of our house-recipe BBQ sauce drizzled over the top!  You can buy it by the bottle to keep on your holiday dinner table.  Also, if you miss out on having any of these Thanksgiving classics at your particular gathering, we've got quite a few of them on our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse menu.

Stop by over the weekend and order up whatever you missed out on during your Thanksgiving feast, or have something totally different for a little break from the leftovers you have in your fridge.  The best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines will be here the entire weekend after Thanksgiving serving up our delicious food, pouring our awesome drinks, and showing all of your favorite games.  Hopefully we'll be seeing you.  Until then, have a great Thanksgiving!
