5 Interesting Facts About the Stanley Cup

The first of 7 possible games for the 2015 Stanley Cup started last night.  If you are looking for the best place to watch the game in Des Moines, look no further than The Boot!  Our beloved Chicago Blackhawks are in the running once again.  Here are a few fun facts about the Stanley Cup to spark some conversation during all of those commercial breaks.

1. Who was Stanley?

Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston, was the 1892 Governor General of Canada.  He and his family became huge fans of hockey at Montreal's 1889 Winter Carnival. Lord Stanley purchased a decorative cup in London for around $50 that he gave as a donation to award Canada's top amateur hockey club.

2. A new cup is not reproduced every year, but it's always changing.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy given out in competition in North America. Instead of giving the new champions their own Cup to keep, they are given the Stanley Cup for just that year.  Five, detachable rings are added to the bottom of it with winners names engraved each year.  When these rings become full, they are taken off and preserved in Lord Stanley's Vault in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

3. There are actually 3 "one-of-a-kind" Stanley Cups.

The original Stanley Cup is now actually preserved and on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.  A Presentation Cup was created in 1963 and is the official Cup awarded to this day.  The third Cup is a replica of the Presentation Cup and is used as a stand-in at the Hall of Fame when the Presentation Cup is not there.

4. The Stanley Cup has a chaperone.

The Cup always has at least one representative that has absolute power over everything to do with the Stanley Cup.  Lord Stanley insisted on this so that it was kept in proper condition.  This is important due to the fact that the Cup is always on the go.  Each player on the winning team gets one day to keep the Cup to do with as they wish.  This has been a tradition since 1995.

5. The cup's travels are logged in a journal.

Since each player is given 24 hours with the Cup, a journal was started to record it's travels.  You can follow the Stanley Cup Journal on the Official Site of the Hockey Hall of Fame.  The journal dates back as far as 2003.  Some players just enjoy having it for the day, but some choose to have a bit of fun with it.  This "Cup" leads quite an eventful life.

There are at least 3 games left to watch, and 6 more if both teams really fight for it.  Swing by Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and watch with us.  We've got plenty of screens for everyone to watch on, drinks will be cold, and food will be hot.  The best possible way to watch the game if you can't be at the stadium.

Would You Like To Start With An Appetizer?

This is a question that you are very likely to be asked by your server when you dine out.  Why would you want to eat before you eat?  Read over Wobbly boots menu featuring the best appetizers in Clive, Iowa and that seems like a silly question.  Once you glance over those tasty items, of course you will want to order an appetizer!  But seriously, did you ever wonder why people serve appetizers in the first place?

The definition of appetizer is "a small portion of a food served at the beginning of a meal to stimulate the desire to eat."  According to that, the appetizer is meant to tease your taste buds and make you want more.

Another reason for serving an appetizer besides making you want to eat a meal, is to tame your hunger just enough so that you can make it until the meal is ready.  Giving your guests these small portions before the main course is a kind gesture to keep everyone from feeling overly hungry while the party gets started. When multiple courses are served, it stretches the evening out longer, giving everyone more time to enjoy the evening together.

Ancient Greeks and Romans took their appetizers to the extreme.  The foods that they offered up to whet their appetites were often the size of what would be considered a main course today.

During the Renaissance, doctors told people that eating small amounts of food, especially salty meats, prepared the digestive system for the actual meal, making digestion easier.

When you are dining at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, knowing that an appetizer is on it's way can make you less frantic about deciding which meal to order. That's a tough decision with a menu as varied and delicious as ours, and not a choice to be made lightly.  Be assured, though, that you really can't go wrong with whatever you pick.  We pride ourselves on offering you the best food in Clive, Iowa, and our yummy appetizers will definitely whet your appetite and make you want more.

Our Hybrid BBQ Style

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse offers you the best BBQ in Clive, Iowa, and we believe this is because of what we like to call our "Hybrid BBQ."  That's how we refer to our cooking style that is a unique blend of flavors & styles of the BBQ meccas of the United States.  This week we'd like to share the history of a few of the BBQ styles that we pull our inspiration from to bring you the best food in Clive Iowa.

Kansas City Stlye BBQ
KC Style BBQ is slow-smoked over a variety of woods.  The sauce is a very important part.  The sauces in this region are tomato-based, with many flavor profiles:  sweet, spicy, and tangy.  While most places offer a variety, the staple KC style sauce is generally both spicy and sweet.  Kansas City BBQ evolved form the pit of Henry Perry in the early 1900s, and they have been serving there and all over the U.S. ever since.

St. Louis Style BBQ
Many of the foods considered St. Louis Style BBQ are grilled rather than cooked over the indirect heat and smoke that most BBQs are.  The sauces form here tend to be very sweet, slightly acidic, & sticky tomato-based sauces.  St. Louis loves it sauce!  They often use it heavily, enough so that they are said to consume more barbecue sauce per capita than any other city in the nation.

Memphis Style BBQ
Memphis Style BBQ is slow cooked in a pit.  The mostly use pork for their barbecue, usually the ribs and shoulders.  These can be served either "dry" (without sauce) or "wet" (with sauce).  The "wet" ribs not only get their sauce after cooking, but before and during too.

Texas Style BBQ
East Texas in particular, slowly cooks their beef to the point that is is "falling off the bone."  Just the way we like it!  Hickory wood is usually used for smoking meats.  Marinades tend to be sweet and tomato-based, as is their generally thick sauce.

Wobbly Boots Style BBQ
Our version of BBQ meats are generously coated in our special dry rub and smoked low and slow over hickory for maximum flavor & tenderness. Before serving, we add our house-recipe sauce (we make it right here) to compliment the flavor of the meat!  Our Lake of the Ozarks Wobbly Boots Roadhouse just won "Best BBQ at the Lake" for it's 5th year in a row.  We are proud to be able to bring this award-winning flavor to all of our friends and family right here in Clive.
