Why Eat BBQ For Dinner?... Why Not! 5 Great Reason To Do It

With all of the different dining choices available on a daily basis, you may have to do a little convincing to get everyone in your group to agree on picking the best BBQ in Des Moines for dinner. If they've ever tasted the food from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive before, it will be an easy argument to win. On the other hand, if they haven't tried us yet, here are a five excellent points to bring up to convince them that BBQ is the way to go.

#1 - It Tastes Great!
In our humble opinion, that should be enough reason to choose BBQ for your next meal! Not all BBQ is equal though, so you may need to tell your friends just why Wobbly Boots BBQ is worth the trip. First of all, we slow-smoke our meats over hickory for the intense, rich, full-bodied flavor that particular wood produces. After years of practice and perfection, our cooks know exactly how long to leave each meat in the smoker to make sure it reaches its most mouthwatering potential.

Add to that deliciousness our house recipe BBQ sauce and special dry rubs, and you've got a taste that will leave you wanting to come back again and again. Both the cooking process and the sauce recipe make up our hybrid-style of BBQ which was inspired by the 4 BBQ meccas of the U.S.A.: Kansas City, St. Louis, Memphis, and Texas. We learned from the greats, but created a flavor that you will only find here at the Boot!

#2 - Lots of Dishes to Try
When some people hear BBQ, they sometimes limit their idea of dishes to chicken, burgers, and steak, like they might grill at home. On the contrary, our menu has a wide variety of different meats that we hickory-smoke, which include but are not limited to:

  • Hand-Pulled Pork
  • Sliced Turkey Breast
  • Sweet Smoked Italian Sausage
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Tender Smoked Beef Brisket
  • Brisket Burnt Ends
  • Baby Back Ribs
  • Chicken
  • Wobbly Wings
You don't just have to order those meats piled on a plate together or stacked high on a bun. One glance through our extensive menu shows you that many of our dishes are created using these savory smoked meats as one of many ingredients to create unique and delicious dishes. You'll have to come back many, many times to try all of them!

#3 - BBQ Pairs Well With Beer and Sports
Sports fans will be thrilled to find out that they can eat BBQ while enjoying all of their favorite sports on our 17 TVs which are placed strategically throughout the restaurant. It doesn't matter whether you pull up a seat at the bar or a table in the dining room, you won't miss any of the action.

An ice-cold beer is an excellent beverage to wash down a plate full of hickory-smoked BBQ. Here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, we not only have a wide selection of bottled beers, but 18 incredible beers on tap as well. We always have a wonderful selection of local Iowa brews mixed in there too, because after all, Iowans know how to brew an amazing beer! If you didn't know that already, come in soon and let us pour one for you.

#4 - Food All Ages Love
If it's the family that you're trying to convince rather than a group of friends, our family-friendly atmosphere and down-home hospitality will make everyone feel right at home when they walk through the doors. Young diners will be pleased with choices on our kids' menu, which include favorites like Chicken Strips, Mini Corn Dogs, Cheeseburger, Grilled Cheese, and Mac & Cheese. There's even a kid's version of our Pork Sliders if they're ready to start moving toward becoming a smoked meat lover.

Let them use our tasty BBQ sauce for dipping and they'll be hooked! The very best part is that eating BBQ encourages you to get a little messy, which kids absolutely love. As long as you take care of cleaning up yourselves when you're done (we have plenty of wet naps for you) we're happy to clean up all of the dishes.

#5 - The Boot is More Than BBQ
There's always that one person in every group that won't agree with you. (Unless of course, they've been to the Boot before, which means they already realize how great it is here!) For that one friend that refuses to eat BBQ tonight, let them know that our Des Moines BBQ restaurant has all kinds of items on the menu that are not BBQ related! For example, we have Spinach Artichoke Dip and Crab Stuffed Mushrooms for starters, plus savory salads, fantastic flatbreads, Black Angus Burgers, and sandwiches like the Catfish BLT and our Famous Tenderloin. (An Iowa restaurant staple!)

Well, while writing this we've certainly convinced ourselves that dinner at our family-friendly restaurant in Des Moines sounds like a perfect idea tonight, and we're willing to bet you think so too! Now all you have to do is share this wisdom with all of your friends and you'll be dining at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in no time.

Our Favorite Football Foods to Enjoy During the Game

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse will be closing early this Sunday at 3:00 pm (Feb. 4, 2018) but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of the best BBQ in Des Moines while you watch the game. You can throw the most amazing watch party in town when you order all of your Boot favorites to go! Here are a few suggestions that football fans always love.

Wobbly Wings
Jumbo Chicken Wings coated with our house dry rub, then slow-roasted over hickory, ensuring only the most flavorful juiciest wings possible. We can serve them plain or with your choice of one of our signature sauces in orders of 5, 10, 20, 30, or more! (Stock up, because they disappear fast during the game!) Sauce choices include:
  • Teriyaki - Our own house-made sweet and sticky glaze.
  • Hot Dijon Sauce - A little hot mustard + buffalo sauce + some sweet = Delish!
  • Jalapeno Garlic - Minced jalapenos combined with garlic in a butter sauce.
  • Chipotle Buffalo - Buffalo sauce infused with chipotle peppers making a buttery, smoky Buffalo sauce.
  • Bar-B-Que - Our own, homemade in-house BBQ sauce. A perfect addition to those tender, smoky wings!

Boneless Wings
Hand-breaded fresh to order! You get a bountiful amount of all-white chicken breast cut into wing-size and fried to golden crisp perfection. They are available plain or tossed with any of our Wobbly Wings sauces.

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
Jumbo shrimp individually wrapped in our hickory-smoked bacon and grilled to perfection.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip
Our house blend of spinach, artichoke hearts, & three different kinds of cheese, combined with our secret spice blend. Serve it bubbling hot with crispy pita chips.

Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
A bountiful blend of crab meat, cream cheese, cheddar-jack cheese, and special seasoning stuffed in large mushroom caps and baked to a golden brown and topped with Provel cheese.

Homemade Chicken Strips
All-white chicken tenders, buttermilk dipped, hand-breaded, and fried to a golden brown. Tender and Delicious! We've got ranch or honey mustard dipping sauces available, but we highly suggest dunking these strips in our house-made BBQ sauce for a real treat.

Hickory-Smoked Meats
(Small orders or buy in bulk!)
You'll definitely want to stock up on our most popular item - those mouthwatering hickory-smoked meats! You can set out plates of a few different ones alongside some slider buns and let your guests build their own sandwiches. Have a couple of bottles of our housemade BBQ sauce sitting there next to them for additional yumminess!
  • Pulled Pork
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Smoked Sweet Italian Sausage Links
  • Smoked Turkey Breast
  • Beef Brisket
  • Burnt Ends
  • Chicken
  • Tender Baby Back Ribs
**Please note, if you're throwing a party for the big game and will be needing large quantities of food, we may need some advance notice to meet your requests. Don't forget a few sides too! We can dish up our homestyle side dishes by the pint or even the quart.

Please give us a call at 515-223-5700 as soon as possible to make arrangements to have the best BBQ in Des Moines for your guests. Remember, we will be closing early on Sunday, February 4, 2018, so orders will have to be picked up before 3:00 pm. That gives you plenty of time to grab your to-go order from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and still get back home in time to get everything ready before the game starts!

A BBQ Lover's Holiday Gift List

Most of the people we know here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive are BBQ lovers, so when it comes time to think up holiday gift ideas, the first presents that come to mind have to do with delicious, hickory-smoked yumminess! If you have friends that fit this category (or you're the BBQ lover and are making a list for yourself) we've got some great ideas for you.

Wobbly Boots Gift Cards
The very best gift you can give to a BBQ lover is free BBQ! When it happens to be the best BBQ in Des Moines, even better! You can pick up a Wobbly Boots Roadhouse gift card in the amount of your choice so that you can share your favorite dishes with everyone on your list. All they have to do is come in, pick something out, and pay with your wonderful gift instead of their own hard-earned cash. Easy to buy and easy to use - now that's a perfect present!
An Amazing BBQ Sauce
You can even send some Wobbly Boots home with the people on your list by buying them a few bottles of our savory, house recipe BBQ sauce. This lets them add our special flavor to anything they eat. Not everything has to be hickory-smoked to pair perfectly with our sauce.

Grilling Equipment
We realize that there will be times when you aren't close enough to the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines to let us cook for you, but your love for that hickory-smoked goodness means you had to learn to cook up a few dishes of your own. (It's a delicious hobby!) There are useful items that can make a home-grilling experience better, like spatulas, tongs, cutting boards, specialty rubs, coolers to hold your beer while you cook, etc... Of course, make sure a few jars of the Boots' housemade BBQ sauce are at the top of that list to finish it all off with!
A Cool Apron
If you don't get messy around BBQ, you're doing it wrong! For anyone wanting to try their hand at becoming a grillmaster, an awesome apron is a must. It will keep you clean, plus make you look like the expert you are (or hope to be!) Have some fun and find one that shows off the gift recipient's personality.

Those are all great gift ideas that any BBQ lover would be thrilled to receive, and don't forget, if you're hosting any holiday get-togethers this year, we cater too! We provide the best catering in Des Moines that can be delivered directly to you if you live in our delivery area, or you can order your BBQ to go and pick it up. That's an excellent way to turn a few more of your friends into BBQ lovers!

7 of the Most Popular Tailgate Party Foods

The best place to watch football in Des Moines is from the comfortable seats in our restaurant in front of our 17 TVs. That is if you're not watching from the actual stadium, of course. (Unless it's cold & rainy. Then it's much better here!)

The Wobbly Boots Roadhouse menu is full of mouthwatering treats, including 7 of the most popular foods to tailgate with. You can eat them here, or you pick them up to take with you to the parking lot of your team's stadium. Either way, you're going to want to get a plateful of these!

Wings
This is a perfect food for tailgating because you are expected to eat it with your hands, meaning no silverware to mess with and plates are optional. (Of course, you'd better have a LOT of napkins handy!) If you're taking our Wobbly Wings to go, consider getting your favorite sauce on the side for dipping to make it a little less messy. If you're eating them here, we'll give you a plate and plenty of wet naps!

Burgers
A big, juicy burger is a classic football food item. The toppings you add make a big difference, but it's how you prepare the burger that really matters. All of our burgers are made from 100% hand-pattied Black Angus ground chuck, grilled on a flat-top iron, and served on a fresh soft bun. The best in the Midwest!

Chicken
You can usually find quite a few people grilling chicken when you attend a tailgate, and as good as grilled chicken tastes, our hickory-smoked version is way better! We give you a half chicken that has been generously rubbed in our house spices and then slow-smoked. For the finishing touch, it's thrown on the grill and given a light glaze of our house BBQ sauce. Great on its own, but you can also order it paired with the next popular tailgate item on our list.

Ribs
Much like chicken wings, you're going to eat these with your hands and you're going to get messy! (But isn't that part of the fun?) You can get as messy as you like when you eat our slow-smoked, dry-rubbed, Baby Back Ribs that are grilled and basted in our house-recipe BBQ sauce. It's easy to wash off when you're finished, and if you're eating it in the football stadium parking lot, well, you are outside.

Pulled Pork
A heaping helping of hand-pulled, hickory-smoked pork on a fresh bun always hits the spot, and after all, why not have a little pig before watching your team throw around the "pigskin?" We love this particular meat so much, we even added it to the recipe for the next food on the list.

Nachos
Chips, cheese, and jalapenos are usually enough for most football fans, but we couldn't stop there! When you order nachos at Wobbly Boots BBQ, you don't get just any old cheese. We use our homemade queso along with cheddar-jack cheese, plus add tomatoes, onions, baked beans, and our unbelievable pulled pork! The salsa, sour cream, and jalapenos on the side give them even more tasty flavor.

Chips & Dip
It's always good to have some sides handy when you just want to munch, and chips & dips are perfect for this. Here at the Boot, we've got platters of Chips, Salsa, & Queso, and you can also order our house-recipe Spinach & Artichoke Dip.

We love it when a big crowd gathers in our Des Moines BBQ restaurant to watch football with us, but if you prefer to attend the games in person, pick up your favorite Wobbly Boots Roadhouse tailgate-ready foods to go on your way to the stadium. We also have catering available if you'll be throwing a football watching party at your place, and if you spend at least $100 and give us 24 hours notice, we'll deliver it to you! Your favorite team will provide the excitement, and we'll provide the delicious food to enjoy while you watch the game.

Celebrate National Family Meals Month With a Table Full of BBQ

September is National Family Meals Month. This is a wonderful incentive to make the effort to eat together as a family whenever you get the chance. Once your family knows the table will be filled with something they love, like the best BBQ in Des Moines, they'll be extra willing to give it a try!

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse knows that the dinner table is an excellent place for families to come together and stay bonded with one another. It doesn't even have to be dinner. Any meal works equally as well, as long as you are spending time together. If this can happen every day, that's wonderful, but if you have a busy, active family, this can be difficult. Studies show that striving to have at least 3 meals together a week offers many of the positive benefits listed below.

Builds Family Relationships
Sitting down together gives everyone in your family the chance to catch up on each other's lives. This gives a person comfort and a feeling of belonging. Once having a family meal together becomes a regular routine, this time of day will offer a sense of security. The more you know about each other's lives, the closer you can be.

Improves Social Interactions
Children that are comfortable talking to the adults in the home on a regular basis find it easier to talk to other adults outside the family. These interactions with adults are also excellent vocabulary builders for children, and it's a nice time to pick up good manners. When it comes to dealing with other kids their own age, children that experience regular family meals have an easier time resisting peer pressure.

Encourages Kids To Eat Healthy
Younger children may have to rely on parents for the food they eat, but teenagers are often left on their own. Eating together as a family gives you a chance to encourage healthy eating choices, both by the food being served at the meal and by the example set from what you are eating.

Perfect Setting For Trying New Foods
When a family eats together, it gives them all a chance to learn about each other's favorite foods. Share things that you like for the kids to try, and introduce new foods often to try together. This is another place where kids will follow your example.

Improves Children's Grades
Studies have also been done that show kids are twice as likely to get A's and B's on their report cards if they experience family dinners at least 3 times a week. This most likely comes from the increased vocabulary, ease around others, and healthy habits they have picked up from the family meal time.

Reasons To Eat BBQ Together
We've given you some of the wonderful reasons we've found to get into the habit of eating regular family meals together. Now, we've got a few reasons why you should occasionally bring the gang to Wobbly Boots BBQ for one of those meals.
  • You don't have to cook. We'll take care of it for you, giving you more time to hang out together.
  • You don't have to clean up. Yep, we've got that taken care of for you too.
  • You get variety. If each person orders a different type of menu item, everyone gets to sample them all instead of just one dish.
  • You can catch the game together. Family meal time is a time to tune out everything else and focus on each other. If you all happen to be sports fans, though, you can have a hearty discussion cheering on your favorite teams together!
  • You can order it to go. The hickory-smoked goodness of our Des Moines BBQ restaurant can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. Let us know what you'd like, and we'll pack it up for you. We won't be there to clean up, but hey, no dishes that night!
Life gets busy, but spending time with your family is an important part of it, so making the effort to eat together more often is a great goal to have. Remember, when you choose to dine at our family restaurant in Des Moines, you're a part of our extended family too.

Rave Reviews for Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

From time to time, we like to share some of the wonderful things that our customers have said about their visit to our Des Moines BBQ restaurant. It gives those of you that have not had the chance to try our delicious dishes the unbiased opinions of people that don't work here, so you aren't just taking our word for it. Here are some of the latest reviews that Wobbly Boots Roadhouse has received.

"We had a family dinner with 8. Ordered from apps to ribs, meatloaf, burnt ends, and sandwiches. Service was very good. We rated Wobbly over Jethros . The menu was diverse with something for everyone."
-samjwells, TripAdvisor review

"We were a big group in town with our kids for a baseball tournament. Had reservations for 6:30 p.m. We were also a loud group and the staff put up with us and the cheers from the kids while they watched the Cubs game  Our waitress was great! She took good care of us and seemed unfazed with all of the confusion since the kids all sat together, then moms on one end of our tables and dads on the other end. The food was awesome as well. We would definitely eat here again. Thanks!"
-Mike Vicki Kuper, Facebook review

"The "burnt ends" were as good as in Texas. The price was right. The serving could have fed two adults."
-Lo S, TripAdvisor review

"Fantastic!!! Quick, good service, nice portions and HOT food! Huge variety and tasted great. No need for extra sauce, or sauce at all. Priced reasonably also. We will be back"
-Shelana L, Yelp review

"Great food. The Crab Rangoon Flatbread is awesome. Also their caramel hot cider alcoholic drink is awesome. Definitely be back there again"
-Katie R. Fenton, Zomato review

"Amazing food!! BBQ is very good and atmosphere is even better!"
-Heidi Fisher Sickerson, Facebook review

"We really enjoyed this place!! We had a great server Karra (probably spelled wrong) and to boot (no pun intended) the food was incredible!! There were 5 of us and we were shocked at how quickly our food arrived and every one of us completely cleaned our plates!!! Wish we had been in town more than one night to eat there again!!!"
-Rhonda Kimerling, Facebook review

"The food was all delicious. The burnt ends sandwich was delicious- one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The meat is so tender. Fries and beans were good too."
-Kimberly M, TripAdvisor review

"I'm not good at trying new places so I just decided to go for it. I'm also a little bit picky. My burger was cooked to request and I was only able to eat half so it might be nice to share. The reason you would want to share is so you can eat all the onion rings. Big and crispy and perfect. I left lots of napkins on the table, my fingers were finger licking good. All condiments and extra napkins are already on the table and wait staff was timely and not in my face.Since it was my first time I wasn't prepared for the size of the bar. It's half of the restaurant with TV screens everywhere. It would be a great place to watch a game and have a bite to eat."
-Elyse S, Yelp review

"First time for us. Quality food and service. We arrived at 6:15 pm on a Saturday night and thought for sure we would have to wait to be seated, no waiting got right in. Friendly greeting at the door and manager came around to check on us. Delicious smoked meat. Prime rib melts in your mouth. My husband had the 3 meat meal and they really pile on the meat. It made enough for two meals. Casual dining with great food and service. Definitely will be back again."
-Nancy Hildreth Townsend, Facebook review

"Awesome place, people and one heck of a menu!!!! Had a blast."
-Todd Sanders, Facebook review
