Local Brew on Tap: Boone Valley Brewing Company

When you are in the mood for the best beer in Des Moines, make your way on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. Our 18 taps give you lots of choices, and we are proud to feature our favorite local Iowa breweries in that selection. Today we have decided to put the spotlight on the Boone Valley Brewing Company.

It all started with a kit.

What began as merely a fun notion to make beer from a kit soon turned into a passion for brewing. The beer from the kit turned out good, but wasn't nearly enough of a challenge for Rick, Jon, and Ron. These fellas spent many hours in the garage improving upon their brew-master skills.

Life's obligations drew Jon and Ron away from the task, but Rick simply couldn't give it up. Craving the honest opinions of those outside of his circle of friends, Rick began entering several competitions throughout Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It soon became obvious that he knows what he is doing due to the several awards that were earned along the way.

A true beer lover.

Fellow brewers fondly refer to Rick as the "Willie Wonka of Beers" and the "Phantom Brewer." His favorite subject to discuss with fellow beer-lovers is the art of making beer. Rick hasn't forgotten how it all began in a garage with close friends, and he loves to encourage other home-brewers with advice from his own experience.

Roxie Irish Red

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is thrilled to be able to include Boone Valley Brewing Company among our local beer options. Right now our bar has the Roxie Irish Red on tap.

Their version of an Irish Red Ale is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas. A medium-bodied 5.5% ABV beer, it is very easy to drink and has a clean finish. An excellent choice for washing down the best BBQ in Des Moines.

Hearty Salads & Big City Flatbreads

We talk a lot about our BBQ here at the Boot (because it's the best BBQ in Des Moines!), but our other menu options are every bit as delicious. Our hearty salads and incredible flatbreads are an excellent way to entertain your taste buds. We've even found a way to add our Wobbly Boots BBQ hickory-smoked meats into some of these great dishes, for those of you that simply cannot go without them.

The Garden Salad

Nothing too fancy here, simply light and delicious. This salad is full of a crisp blend of greens topped with Cheddar-Jack & Provel cheeses, tomatoes, and red onions.

Chicken Tender Salad

This is a definitely a meal on its own! Our large chilled salad bowl is filled with mixed leafy greens and generously topped with tomatoes, red onions, Cheddar-Jack & Provel cheese. We then finish it with our hand-breaded chicken tenders. If you like, we're happy to serve your chicken "buffalo style," or even substitute any one of our tasty smoked meats at no extra charge.

Here is where we feature those irresistible hickory-smoked meats in what we consider the "King of Salads!" This time our chilled salad bowl is once again filled with crisp greens, then topped with generous portions of smoked ham & turkey, crumbled bacon, hard-boiled egg, avocado, tomatoes, red onion, and Cheddar-Jack & Provel cheeses.

BIG CITY FLATBREADS

Crab Rangoon

We take our very own real crab rangoon filling and slather it on flatbread. Next it is topped with a 3-cheese Asiago, Mozzarella, & Provel mix, then sprinkled with fried won tons and a drizzle of sweet chili sauce.

Smoked BBQ Chicken

For this savory flatbread, our hickory-smoked white meat chicken gets tossed in our house-made BBQ sauce. This is placed on top of our special blend of Mozzarella & Provel cheeses with just a few red onions.

7 Football Food Fun Facts About Chicken Wings

Every current list that we came across listed the #1 football food to eat during Superbowl 50 as chicken wings. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse's award-winning wings will be at the top of your "favorite wings" list once you try them. The best restaurant in Des Moines knows exactly how to prepare them so they are tender, juicy, and mouth-watering. While we're on the subject of wings, let's start out by telling you a few fun facts about this football-watching food favorite.

1. The Superbowl turns 50 this year, but the wing has been around longer. This March marks 52 years since they were first served in Buffalo, New York.

2. Chicken wings gained popularity as a football food after the Buffalo Bills played in four Superbowls in a row.

3. On Superbowl Sunday, Americans generally eat about 1.25 billion chicken wings across the country.

4. The average person can eat a dozen wings in one sitting.

5. The world record for most wings eaten was set in January 2015 at Philadelphia's Wing Bowl 23. Patrick Bertoletti ate 444 chicken wings in 26 minutes, followed very closely by Molly Schuyler who ate 440 chicken wings.

6. In the long-time debate over ranch vs. bleu cheese dressing for chicken wing dipping, ranch usually wins with the most votes.

Here at the Boot, we take extra-special care preparing chicken wings. Our juicy jumbo wings are coated in our house dry rub, then slow-roasted in the hickory pit. We we serve them up with your choice of ranch or bleu cheese (because we love both!) Order them in batches of 5, 10, 20, or 30, either dry or with one of our four delicious sauce choices.
