10 Fun Facts for National BBQ Month

The glorious month of May is dedicated to our favorite subject - BBQ! National BBQ Month is in full swing, and there is no better place to celebrate than at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. Our hybrid style BBQ and house made sauce make us the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines

Why do we love BBQ so much? Well, the obvious reason is the savory, juicy, hickory-smoked taste. We took inspiration form the BBQ meccas of the United States to create our unique and delicious menu. Here are a few more fun and interesting BBQ facts that may encourage your own love for this fabulous food.

1. The original BBQ sauce dates back hundreds of years. People can't seem to agree on the exact date, but it seems as if the original sauces were made with vinegar and pepper. Today, common ingredients are garlic and brown sugar. Wanna know what our homemade BBQ sauce is made with? Shhhhhh... that's for us to know and you to enjoy!

2. No one can seem to agree on exactly where the term barbecue came from either. Some say it originated in the Caribbean word "barbacoa." The French agree that they saw this method of cooking in the Caribbean, but they claim to have named it "barbe a queue" which means "from beard to tail."

3. Barbecue is a very versatile word. It can be used as a noun, a verb, and an adjective. We're also pretty sure it's a synonym for YUM!

4. The most popular days to consume BBQ are, in order, the 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.

5. The most common woods to smoke meat are: hickory (our favorite method!), mesquite, maple, cherry, pecan, apple, and oak.

6. It is said that the most popular foods to BBQ are, in order, Burgers, steak, hot dogs, and chicken. While we do not have hot dogs on the Wobbly Boots Roadhouse menu, we think you'll forgive us. We do offer all of those other items in a variety of delicious, hickory-smoked ways.

7. The largest serving of barbecued beef ever offered happened on March 20, 2011 in Argentina. 20,000 guests consumed 20,132.61 pounds of the tasty beef.

8. There have been bigger gatherings, though. 45,252 hungry people came together in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on August 18, 2013 to eat BBQ together.

9. Now for a record claimed in the U.S.A. On April 27, 2014, Jan Greeff, in association with Car-Broil LLC, grilled for 80 hours straight! During that time, 1,000 hot dogs, 200 pieces of corn, 104 pieces of chicken, 558 burgers, and 526 bratwurst were turned out. This event also raised over $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Columbus, Georgia.

10. In Iowa, Barbecue Month is celebrated every month inside our Des Moines BBQ restaurant!
