The Best Iowa Beers on Tap at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

National American Beer Day is October 27, 2016, and the best bar in Des Moines definitely has some amazing American brews for you. This is especially true of the delicious beers we have on tap that are made right here in Iowa! Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is proud to serve these local favorites that we believe the entire country should have the privilege to enjoy.

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, Des Moines, BBQ

Confluence Brewing Company
Made right here in our very own Des Moines, this brewery has been in business since 2012, but the dream began back in 1991 when John Martin, the company's head brewer, began playing around with beer made from grain crops found in Iowa. He researched and practiced for a few years, then began Confluence Brewing Company with co-founder Ken Broadhead.

Our Des Moines BBQ restaurant currently has three of their amazing beers on tap. Farmer John's is a refreshing blonde, multi-grain ale. The Des Moines IPA is their American take on an India Pale Ale. We've got their seasonal Oktoberfest on tap right now too. This rich, amber colored lager has a full-bodied, toasty flavor.

Exile Brewing Company
Also located right here in Des Moines, these guys describe themselves as "a hand-crafted brewery fueled by the passion of a burn-bright lifestyle and driven by a unique sense of gratitude for the customer, community, and the future of our land." Each one of their brews is a dedication to both a European tradition and the quality of good old American hard work.

When you belly up to the bar at the Boot, you'll be able to order two of Exile's creations. Hannah is a unique Bavarian wheat with a distinct and refreshing flavor. It's actually named for Exile's lifelong friend, which they describe as outspoken and independent, just like this beer. The other one that we offer is Ruthie, a smooth gold lager with a robust body. It's named for the finest woman to ever have served a beer in 1950's Des Moines.

Boone Valley Brewing Company
Boone, Iowa is the home of our next featured brew house. What began as merely a fun notion to make beer from a kit soon turned into a passion for brewing. After entering several contests and winning multiple awards, it became obvious that Rick knew what he was doing. Often referred to as the "Willie Wonka of Beers" and the "Phantom Brewer," his skills produced the Boone Valley Brewing Company.

You will find two of their beers when you visit our Des Moines restaurant. First of all, their medium-bodied Roxie Irish Red is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas. The Halligan Porter is an American porter which is low in bitterness with slight roasted and chocolate flavors and aromas.

Peace Tree Brewing Company
Next up is a brewery out of Knoxville, Iowa that began business in a former Nash Rambler car dealership in 2010. The name comes from the historic grand sycamore that grew near the town of Red Rock, which was a meeting place for many generations of Native Americans, and later it was a meeting place for fur traders too.

This company used the tree as their symbol because they hope that their beers will be "shared with friends and strangers alike and act as a catalyst for conversations, new friendships, and important agreements - in line with the lore of the Peace Tree of Red Rock." We love Peace Tree here at Wobbly Boots. Their Blonde Fatale is a Belgium-style blonde ale that is surprisingly smooth.

Enjoy Them For Happy Hour
Every Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm you can get each of these delicious Iowa drafts for only $3 each at the best Happy Hour in Des Moines! That price is good for all of our 18 beers on tap. You can also get $3 Captain Morgan cocktails and $5 specialty drinks. If you've been looking for a few new great American beers to try, head on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and give these Iowa natives a try. We bet you're going to have a few new favorites!

The Early History of Our Modern Smoked Meatloaf

Fall is the perfect time to cozy up and enjoy some tasty, Southern comfort food. The smoked meatloaf on our Des Moines BBQ restaurant menu is a popular item around here. It's a dish that nearly everyone has fond memories of from childhood, but we put our own Wobbly Boots Roadhouse twist on it by preparing it in the smoker.

Meatloaf's Long History
The origin of this delicious loaf of meat dates back as early as 5th century Rome. The recipe found in one of their ancient cookbooks was made my mixing chopped meat, bread, and wine. Meatloaf is also a traditional dish of Germany, Scandinavia, and Belgium, and it has been linked as a "cousin" of the Dutch meatball.

The origin of modern-day American meatloaf comes from a dish called "scrapple." German-Americans in Pennsylvania made this by combining leftover pork scraps and trimmings with cornmeal and other seasonings. This particular recipe was pan-fried before being served.

The meatloaf of today didn't begin showing up in cookbooks until the late 19th century. It was a very popular dish during the Great Depression because it gave families the ability to stretch inexpensive meats into a large meal. Lots of filler ingredients could be added to make it serve more people, and many housewives went so far as to create "meatless" meatloaves.

Our Smoked Meatloaf
Wobbly Boots Roadhouse's homemade meatloaf can be found on our Southern Comfort Foods section of the menu, along with our Smoked Turkey Dinner, Prime Rib Hot Beef, and Chicken Fried Chicken. The term "comfort food" is used to describe dishes that are fairly simple to prepare and often has some type of nostalgia associated to it for the diner. You know, like something that Mom or Grandma used to make.

We take this "simple" dish and make it even easier for you by doing all of the prep work and cooking, but we add something extra that you probably don't do at home. We slow roast this meatloaf in our hickory smoker. That flavor adds another level of amazing to this savory food. Just ask our customers!

"I am not going to lie to you. Whoever came up with the idea of smoked meatloaf deserves a statue somewhere in their honor. This place does it better than most! Good sized portions of great tasting meat with just the right amount of smokiness made it a perfect dinner. Good selection of local beer on tap to wash it down. Guy next to me had the burnt ends which smelled and looked very good too...he wouldn't take his eyes off them for long enough to steal one so I guess I'll have to come back another time. Sean kept my beer glass full.
Jeff C., Norman, OK, Yelp review

To make the entire experience of dining on our smoked meatloaf even better, we pair it with our home-style smashed potatoes & beef gravy and green beans. That's a plate that's going to hit the spot just right on a chilly, fall day!

Give It A Try!
We have a reputation for having the best BBQ in West Des Moines, but once you taste our smoked meatloaf, we have a feeling you'll be telling your friends all about our incredible Southern comfort foods too. If you've already had that particular menu item, we'd love to hear what you have to say about it. Join us at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive soon, pull up a chair, get comfortable, and let us fill your belly with one of our hot, mouth-watering menu items.

National Seafood Month... at the Boot? Of Course!

October happens to be National Seafood Month, and while the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines may not be your first thought when you think seafood, it can be! Our diverse menu contains more than just the most amazing BBQ in Iowa. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse has a little something for everyone, and our seafood dishes happen to be incredible.

Our seafood options consist of shrimp, crab, and catfish. We put our very own Wobbly Boots Roadhouse spin on them for a taste that simply cannot be beat. It is recommended that you eat seafood at least twice a week, but once you try these dishes, you may want to have it even more often than that.

Shrimp
Shrimp are high in protein and many other key nutrients like selenium, Vitamins D and B12, and zinc, and they contain two antioxidants that are important to your body's health. They taste pretty great on their own, but with the addition of our hickory-smoked bacon, the flavor is unbelievable!

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
5 jumbo shrimp individually wrapped with our hickory-smoked bacon, grilled to perfection.

Bacon-Shrimp Salad
A chilled salad bowl filled with mixed greens, bleu cheese crumbles, diced tomatoes, red onions, a hard-boiled egg, and finished with our incredible bacon wrapped shrimp. Delish!!!!

Surf and Turf
A 6 oz top sirloin steak grilled to your liking, topped with sauteed onions and mushrooms, accompanied by three grilled jumbo bacon wrapped shrimp. Two great items on one platter... Outstanding!!! For a small additional charge, you can add 3 bacon wrapped shrimp to any of our steak dinners.

Grilled Shrimp Wrap
Grilled jumbo shrimp with bacon, lettuce, tomato & cheddar-jack cheese all wrapped up in a warm tomato basil tortilla.

Sauteed Shrimp Dinner
Six Jumbo Shrimp gently sauteed in garlic butter until perfect.

Breaded Shrimp Dinner
Six Jumbo shrimp lightly breaded and fried to golden perfection.

Crab
Crab is an excellent source of protein, plus it is low in fat. It also contains Omega-3 that is great for protecting your body from heart disease and aids in brain development. It contains 12 times the selenium found in beef.

Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
A bountiful blend of crab meat, cream cheese, cheddar-jack cheese, and special seasoning stuffed in large mushroom caps and baked to a golden brown, all topped with Provel  cheese.

Crab Rangoon Flatbread
Wobbly Boots own crab rangoon filling slathered on our flatbread pizza crust, topped with mozzarella & Provel cheeses. Finished with fried won tons and a sweet chili drizzle. A customer favorite!

Catfish
This one's high in protein too, plus it's low in mercury. You get lots of B12 from eating catfish, and it also contains healthy fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.

Catfish BLT
A southern-style catfish filet coated in seasoned corn meal and fried to a golden brown. Served on a ciabatta roll with bacon, lettuce, tomato and chipotle mayo.

Catfish Dinner
Two Southern Style catfish fillets hand-breaded and fried to a delicious golden brown. Served with lemon wedges and tartar sauce. A real southern treat.
