Cheers to the Awesome Iowa Beers We Have On Tap at the Boot!

According to the calendar, this Thursday, September 28 is Drink Beer Day! While we don't need a special day to enjoy the best Iowa beers on tap, it is a great excuse to highlight the incredible local brews that we have for you here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse. They change occasionally, but right now, here are the tasty beers we have waiting for you on tap.

Confluence Brewing Company
This city is not only home to the best BBQ in Des Moines, but also this awesome brewery. They have been in business since 2012, but the dream began back in 1991 when John Martin, the company's head brewer, began playing around with beer made from grain crops found in Iowa. He researched, practiced, and taste-tested for a few years, then began Confluence Brewing Company with co-founder Ken Broadhead so you could all enjoy the results.

We feature 3 of their delicious beers on tap here at the Boot. Farmer John's is a refreshing blonde, multi-grain ale. Des Moines IPA is their American take on an India Pale Ale. We've also just added their seasonal Oktoberfest, which is a rich, amber-colored lager with a full-bodied, toasty flavor.

Exile Brewing Company
Des Moines boasts yet another amazing brewery with Exile Brewing Company. These guys describe themselves as "a hand-crafted brewery fueled by the passion of a burn-bright lifestyle and driven by a unique sense of gratitude for the customer, community, and the future of our land." Every beer they brew is a dedication to both European tradition and the quality of good old American hard work.

Right now we've got an Exile favorite on draft, Ruthie. It's a smooth gold lager with a robust body, named for the finest woman to ever have served a beer in 1950's Des Moines.

Boone Valley Brewing Company
Our next featured brewery is based in Boone. Their journey started out as a fun notion to make beer from a kit, but soon turned into a passion for brewing. After winning multiple awards for the beers created, it became obvious that Rick was good at this! Often referred to as the "Willie Wonka of Beers" and the "Phantom Brewer," his hobby turned into an incredible brewery we are proud to feature.

We have the delicious, medium-bodied Roxie Irish Red on tap. It is filled with complex malt flavors and aromas, and it's become a local favorite.

Peace Tree Brewing Company
Knoxville brings us this brewery that has called a former Nash Rambler car dealership home since 2010. The name comes from the historic grand sycamore that grew near the town of Red Rock, which was a meeting place for many generations of Native Americas, and later was a meeting place for fur traders too. The tree is this company's symbol because they hope their beers will be "shared with friends and strangers alike and act as a catalyst for conversations, new friendships, and important agreements - in line with the lore of the Peace Tree of Red Rock."

You'll find two of their tasty creations on tap at the Boot. Blonde Fatale is a Belgium-style blonde ale that is surprisingly smooth. We also have No Coast IPA, which is a big American IPA with tons of bitterness and loads of hop flavor with piney and citrus notes.

Firetrucker Brewery
The people behind Firetrucker Brewery in Ankeny live, breathe, and eat local. Local ingredients are always used in their beers. A sense of innovation, a sense of community, and the desire to improve life is at the forefront during the creation of each of their brews. You can always expect to get lots of flavor, while still maintaining a clean finish.

We feature their Pumper Truck Porter on tap. It comes out of the tap with a silky black appearance and a creamy head. The full, delicious flavor is made from brown and chocolate malts as well as roasted barley and hops.

You can get a taste of any one of these brilliant brews on tap at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive 7 days a week, while they last. As we mentioned, occasionally we'll switch up which beers we carry, but these awesome Iowa breweries will always find their way into our restaurant.

If you join us for the best Happy Hour in Des Moines Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm, you can get all of these for only $3 a glass! Pair these awesome Iowa brews with our mouthwatering, hickory-smoked BBQ, and you've got a great meal ahead of you.

Celebrate National Family Meals Month With a Table Full of BBQ

September is National Family Meals Month. This is a wonderful incentive to make the effort to eat together as a family whenever you get the chance. Once your family knows the table will be filled with something they love, like the best BBQ in Des Moines, they'll be extra willing to give it a try!

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse knows that the dinner table is an excellent place for families to come together and stay bonded with one another. It doesn't even have to be dinner. Any meal works equally as well, as long as you are spending time together. If this can happen every day, that's wonderful, but if you have a busy, active family, this can be difficult. Studies show that striving to have at least 3 meals together a week offers many of the positive benefits listed below.

Builds Family Relationships
Sitting down together gives everyone in your family the chance to catch up on each other's lives. This gives a person comfort and a feeling of belonging. Once having a family meal together becomes a regular routine, this time of day will offer a sense of security. The more you know about each other's lives, the closer you can be.

Improves Social Interactions
Children that are comfortable talking to the adults in the home on a regular basis find it easier to talk to other adults outside the family. These interactions with adults are also excellent vocabulary builders for children, and it's a nice time to pick up good manners. When it comes to dealing with other kids their own age, children that experience regular family meals have an easier time resisting peer pressure.

Encourages Kids To Eat Healthy
Younger children may have to rely on parents for the food they eat, but teenagers are often left on their own. Eating together as a family gives you a chance to encourage healthy eating choices, both by the food being served at the meal and by the example set from what you are eating.

Perfect Setting For Trying New Foods
When a family eats together, it gives them all a chance to learn about each other's favorite foods. Share things that you like for the kids to try, and introduce new foods often to try together. This is another place where kids will follow your example.

Improves Children's Grades
Studies have also been done that show kids are twice as likely to get A's and B's on their report cards if they experience family dinners at least 3 times a week. This most likely comes from the increased vocabulary, ease around others, and healthy habits they have picked up from the family meal time.

Reasons To Eat BBQ Together
We've given you some of the wonderful reasons we've found to get into the habit of eating regular family meals together. Now, we've got a few reasons why you should occasionally bring the gang to Wobbly Boots BBQ for one of those meals.
  • You don't have to cook. We'll take care of it for you, giving you more time to hang out together.
  • You don't have to clean up. Yep, we've got that taken care of for you too.
  • You get variety. If each person orders a different type of menu item, everyone gets to sample them all instead of just one dish.
  • You can catch the game together. Family meal time is a time to tune out everything else and focus on each other. If you all happen to be sports fans, though, you can have a hearty discussion cheering on your favorite teams together!
  • You can order it to go. The hickory-smoked goodness of our Des Moines BBQ restaurant can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. Let us know what you'd like, and we'll pack it up for you. We won't be there to clean up, but hey, no dishes that night!
Life gets busy, but spending time with your family is an important part of it, so making the effort to eat together more often is a great goal to have. Remember, when you choose to dine at our family restaurant in Des Moines, you're a part of our extended family too.
