Our Favorite Football Foods to Enjoy During the Game

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse will be closing early this Sunday at 3:00 pm (Feb. 4, 2018) but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of the best BBQ in Des Moines while you watch the game. You can throw the most amazing watch party in town when you order all of your Boot favorites to go! Here are a few suggestions that football fans always love.

Wobbly Wings
Jumbo Chicken Wings coated with our house dry rub, then slow-roasted over hickory, ensuring only the most flavorful juiciest wings possible. We can serve them plain or with your choice of one of our signature sauces in orders of 5, 10, 20, 30, or more! (Stock up, because they disappear fast during the game!) Sauce choices include:
  • Teriyaki - Our own house-made sweet and sticky glaze.
  • Hot Dijon Sauce - A little hot mustard + buffalo sauce + some sweet = Delish!
  • Jalapeno Garlic - Minced jalapenos combined with garlic in a butter sauce.
  • Chipotle Buffalo - Buffalo sauce infused with chipotle peppers making a buttery, smoky Buffalo sauce.
  • Bar-B-Que - Our own, homemade in-house BBQ sauce. A perfect addition to those tender, smoky wings!

Boneless Wings
Hand-breaded fresh to order! You get a bountiful amount of all-white chicken breast cut into wing-size and fried to golden crisp perfection. They are available plain or tossed with any of our Wobbly Wings sauces.

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp
Jumbo shrimp individually wrapped in our hickory-smoked bacon and grilled to perfection.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip
Our house blend of spinach, artichoke hearts, & three different kinds of cheese, combined with our secret spice blend. Serve it bubbling hot with crispy pita chips.

Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
A bountiful blend of crab meat, cream cheese, cheddar-jack cheese, and special seasoning stuffed in large mushroom caps and baked to a golden brown and topped with Provel cheese.

Homemade Chicken Strips
All-white chicken tenders, buttermilk dipped, hand-breaded, and fried to a golden brown. Tender and Delicious! We've got ranch or honey mustard dipping sauces available, but we highly suggest dunking these strips in our house-made BBQ sauce for a real treat.

Hickory-Smoked Meats
(Small orders or buy in bulk!)
You'll definitely want to stock up on our most popular item - those mouthwatering hickory-smoked meats! You can set out plates of a few different ones alongside some slider buns and let your guests build their own sandwiches. Have a couple of bottles of our housemade BBQ sauce sitting there next to them for additional yumminess!
  • Pulled Pork
  • Applewood Smoked Ham
  • Smoked Sweet Italian Sausage Links
  • Smoked Turkey Breast
  • Beef Brisket
  • Burnt Ends
  • Chicken
  • Tender Baby Back Ribs
**Please note, if you're throwing a party for the big game and will be needing large quantities of food, we may need some advance notice to meet your requests. Don't forget a few sides too! We can dish up our homestyle side dishes by the pint or even the quart.

Please give us a call at 515-223-5700 as soon as possible to make arrangements to have the best BBQ in Des Moines for your guests. Remember, we will be closing early on Sunday, February 4, 2018, so orders will have to be picked up before 3:00 pm. That gives you plenty of time to grab your to-go order from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and still get back home in time to get everything ready before the game starts!

3 Reasons To Stick Around After You're Done With Dinner

You've just enjoyed a delicious dinner (or possibly lunch) at our friendly Des Moines BBQ restaurant. Just because your food is gone, that doesn't mean that you have to leave! We love having you hang out here with us at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, and today we've got 3 great reasons why you should stick around after your plates have been cleared.

Save Room For Dessert
Enjoying a great big plate of the best hickory-smoked meats in Des Moines may make it hard to leave room for something sweet afterward, but if you plan ahead, you just might be able to save a little space for one of our delectable desserts. If you're worried about getting too full, ask for a doggy bag for part of your meal. That way you get a sweet treat after you eat, plus a bonus treat of leftovers for lunch tomorrow! (Maybe even a late-night snack. We know how irresistible our dishes are!) Order some dessert, enjoy it with a cup of coffee, and hang around for a little while longer.

Have An After-Dinner Drink
If you're too full for more food, you may be able to find some room for a refreshing after-dinner drink. We've got a fully-stocked bar and talented bartenders that are able to mix up your favorite cocktails. There's a wonderful variety of ice-cold beers both in the bottle and on tap here too.

We have 18 draft beers available that change periodically, but you will always find a nice selection of local Iowa brews among the mix. If you're sticking around after a late lunch, you may even be able to catch our Happy Hour, which happens every Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm, featuring beer and mixed drink specials.

Catch Some Sports Action
There is always something sporty going on, whether it's a game or something sports-related, and we've always got it playing. You'll find 17 TVs conveniently placed throughout the restaurant, so you don't have to belly up to the bar to catch a game. You can enjoy watching from any seat in the house!

After you're finished eating, feel free to hang out and watch the rest of your game with us. We're sports fans too, and it's always more exciting when you get to watch with a bunch of other fans. As a matter of fact, you might even want to check your favorite teams' schedules so that you can plan your trips to join us at the best place to watch sports in Des Moines ahead of time. (Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner!)

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is open 7 days a week at 11:00 am, ready to serve you a delicious lunch, dinner, Happy Hour snack, and everything in between! Once you step through our doors, we consider you to be a part of our Wobbly Boots family, so don't just come for the best BBQ in Des Moines (although that's an excellent reason on its own) but stay for the company. We love hanging out with you, and we hope that you love joining us often at the Boot.

What Hits the Spot in the Winter? Warm, Southern Comfort Foods!

It doesn't have to be cold outside for you to enjoy Wobbly Boots Roadhouse's delicious Southern Comfort Food menu, but eating a great big hot plate of it on a winter's day seems to make it taste even better than usual! Our Des Moines BBQ restaurant is the perfect place to go when you're craving a mouthwatering meal to combat winter's icy chill.

In addition to being served hot so that it warms your body up, "comfort foods" also offer a cozy feeling that resembles a great big hug to warm up your soul too. The dictionary describes comfort as " a state of ease and satisfaction; a feeling of relief or consolation; to soothe, console, reassure, or bring cheer to." A comfort food is categorized as a dish that is fairly simple to prepare (especially when you let Wobbly Boots BBQ take care of the cooking) and has some type of nostalgia associated with it for you. You know, the stuff like Mom used to make!

Comfort Foods at the Boot
Three of the four fantastic menu items below are prepared in that wonderful smoker that also makes our hickory-smoked BBQ so irresistible. The last one is hand-breaded and deep-fried to perfection. YUM!

Smoked Meatloaf
Not exactly like mom made, but every bit as delicious! Our handmade meatloaf is slow-roasted over hickory. Absolutely one of our best dishes and a customer favorite. It is served open-faced with homemade smashed potatoes, brown gravy, and green beans.

Smoked Turkey Dinner
A generous portion of our all white meat smoked turkey breast served open-faced with smashed potatoes, then covered with delicious turkey gravy and paired with a side of our homemade cheesy corn.

Prime Rib Hot Beef
Our house-smoked Prime Rib thinly sliced and served open-faced on white bread with smashed potatoes, beef gravy, and green beans. Stick to your ribs delicious!

Chicken Fried Chicken
A juicy chicken cutlet tenderized and hand-breaded, then fried to golden perfection. Next we add some of those incredible smashed potatoes and slather it all with white country gravy and serve it with a side of green beans.

Does That Make You Hungry?
It should! If you've had the pleasure of dining at our family restaurant in Des Moines before, you already know that we only serve the most delicious, handmade dishes full of incredible flavor from our kitchen. If this is your first exposure to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive, you should know that even though everything from our Southern Comfort Food Menu sounds and looks awesome, that's nothing compared to how amazing it actually tastes!

The same can be said about our entire menu full of a wonderful variety of dishes made to please everyone in your group. Call your friends or load your family in the car and get everyone here for a fantastic meal that will leave you all anxious to come back again soon for even more!

DID YOU KNOW... Iowa Food Fun Facts

While Iowa's official nickname is "The Hawkeye State," we are also known as "the Corn State." We're also well-known for the many hogs that inhabit our great state, and of course, that famous sandwich. (You know the one we're talking about!) You'll find all 3 of these popular Iowa items at our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, so we thought we'd share some interesting information about each in today's blog.

Corn
DID YOU KNOW that farming encompasses about 90% of the land in Iowa? It's true! Many of those farms have helped to make Iowa the nation's leading producer of corn and corn byproducts. Our unofficial state song is "The Corn Song," which clearly states that "that's where the tall corn grows!"

The Cheesy Corn & Ham from our list of delicious homestyle side dishes incorporates this popular Iowa vegetable. The flavor is intensified by adding cheese and ham, the latter of which happens to be the next item on our list.

Pork
The main ingredient in hog feed is corn, and since we have an abundance of that here in Iowa plus acres upon acres of farmland, it should come as no surprise that we are the country's leading producer of hogs. We are responsible for raising just about 1/4 of the nation's pigs. As a matter of fact, they outnumber the humans in Iowa nearly 4 to 1!

We have a high regard for the incredible pig here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse because that glorious animal is the reason we are able to give you the most tender, flavorful, hickory-smoked Pulled Pork you've ever tasted! Not only is that one of our most popular menu items to order on its own (on a plate or as a sandwich,) we also use it as an important ingredient for many of our other delicious dishes. Some of these include:

  • Bar-B-Que Pork Nachos
  • The Wrangler Wrap
  • Southern Style Pork Sandwich
  • Wobbly Boots Big Loaded Baker
  • Ham, Egg, & Cheese Burger (features our applewood-smoked Ham instead of Pulled Pork)

The Famous Tenderloin
This traditional food is sure to be found an any good menu in Iowa. It's been a staple in our state's classic cuisine for as long as we can remember! Even though Indiana claims to be where this delicious dish was created, the very special people here in Iowa have perfected it!

The very best pork tenderloin in Des Moines can be found right here at Wobbly Boots BBQ. First, we start with a more-than-generous portion of meat. The next step is to hand-dip it in buttermilk, then bread it in our expertly seasoned flour and bread crumbs before frying it to a perfectly beautiful golden brown. It takes a huge appetite to tackle this big boy, but it tastes so good, you'll end up finishing it without any trouble. (Although you may need a doggy bag to take it home!)

More Famous Foods From Iowa
While corn and hogs are our biggest exports, this research uncovered a couple of other foods that have ties to our great state.

  • Sliced Bread - Before the invention of pre-packaged sliced bread, people had to get out a knife and slice it themselves. Well, this must have seemed like a waste of time to Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa. He created the very first loaf-at-a-time bread-slicing machine that was introduced to the world in 1928. It was deemed "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped," which eventually led to the well-known phrase, "the greatest thing since sliced bread." Thanks to this invention, we save precious time not having to slice our sandwich bread and can instead focus on creating those hickory-smoked delicacies we place on it instead.
  • Ice Cream - In 1994, Le Mars, Iowa was designated as the Ice Cream Capital of the World! (Not the country, but the world!) This town is home to Wells Enterprises, Inc., makers of Blue Bunny Ice Cream, and it contains the Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor & Museum. If you're up for a road trip to Le Mars, you can search the city for more than 50 ice cream sculptures. Here at the Boot, we have ice cream available to top your dessert and to use in our amazing Root Beer Floats.

Now that you know more about some of Iowa's most well-known foods, head on over to our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines and taste a few for yourself. The menu is full of them, alongside many other items that are well-known favorites from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse

January is Soup Month! Grab a Bowl at the Boot

January is designated as National Soup Month, which is perfect timing smack dab in the middle of this incredible chilly time of year. The weather is cold outside, but a steaming bowl of delicious soup from Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is just what you need to warm your bones, as well as the rest of your body!

The Boot makes a mean pot of soup that you can enjoy a cup or bowl of alone for a light meal or paired with best BBQ in Des Moines. We've got one scrumptious flavor that's always on the menu, and a second one that changes daily depending on how creative the kitchen crew is feeling that day.

Baked Potato Soup
This delicious dish can be ordered off of our menu 7 days a week, all year long. Big chunks of potato and savory bacon are featured in this rich and creamy soup, and that hearty goodness is garnished with cheddar-jack cheese, green onions, and even more bacon crumbled on top.

You're getting a dose of 3 of the 5 major food groups right in there, and if you enjoy it with a few crackers, well that adds a 4th. Drink a glass of orange juice with that (possibly with a bit of vodka from the bar mixed in...) and you've got a well-balanced meal!

Soup of the Day
Even though our amazing Baked Potato Soup will leave you wanting it again and again, every once in a while it's good to switch things up and try something new. For this reason, we also offer a second soup option every day. Just ask your server when you come in to order what wonderful homemade concoction the kitchen has prepared for that particular day.

Sandwich/ Soup/ Salad Combos
If you enjoy having something in addition to your soup, we've made that easy for you. We also offer a yummy combo plate where you get to pick 2 out of these 3 items to enjoy together for lunch or dinner.

  • Bowl of Soup
  • Garden Salad
  • Sandwich (either Ham & Swiss or Turkey & Swiss served on golden toasted sourdough bread)

Hot, Delicious, and Satisfying
We're sure that you have your favorite things to order from the Wobbly Boots BBQ menu every time you come in, but if that doesn't include one of our soup options already, celebrate Soup Month with us and give it a try. One taste and your body and soul will be all warmed up, and when you're done your tummy will be full and happy! That's pretty much true about all of the food that you order from our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, so no matter what you decide to eat, you're going to leave happy and satisfied.
