The Incredible Moscow Mule (and our Amazing Versions of This Classic)

The best bar in the Des Moines area can be found inside Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive! The 17  televisions for watching all the games, the incredible weekday Happy Hour specials, and the 18 taps featuring some of your favorite Iowa beers are all amazing parts of it, plus we've got an impressive mixed drink menu to add to all of that!

You'll find a wide variety of delicious drinks on our Wobbly Boots BBQ cocktail menu, with an entire section devoted to some new twists on the classic Moscow Mule. If you aren't familiar with this popular beverage, we've gathered some interesting facts about it right here for you.

The Moscow Mule - NOT From Russia!
With Moscow in the title, one would assume that this drink originated in that particular Russian city. On the contrary, it was created right here in the good old U.S.A. John G. Martin, of F.F. Heublien Brothers out of Hartford, Connecticut, bought the Smirnoff vodka company in 1939. Unfortunately for him, Americans were not big vodka fans at the time, and it soon became evident that this was a hard product to sell.

Martin brainstormed with Jack Morgan, the owner of a Los Angeles pub named Cock 'n' Bull, to come up with a way to convince customers to drink more vodka. Morgan's company produced their own house brand of ginger beer, which was also hard to sell at the time. Hoping to move both of their products, they combined the vodka and ginger beer, added a squeeze of lemon, and viola! The next popular cocktail was born. Over time people started using limes instead of lemons, but other than that, this classic recipe has stood the test of time.

The Famous Copper Mug
The recipe can be altered slightly from time to time for new and exciting variations, but it's not officially a Mule drink without that beautiful copper mug. Most people will tell you that the copper is used to keep the drink at a perfect, ice-cold temperature. While the copper mug does seem to make the drink much colder while you are drinking it, the original reason for the device was actually a publicity stunt.

Martin took this new delicious cocktail to bartenders across the country. Once they were hooked, he would ask them to pose for a Polaroid picture holding the copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff. He'd leave one photo at the bar for publicity, and he'd take another copy to the next bar. Once the other bartenders saw that their competitors were offering this brand new sensation, they knew that they should too.

Wobbly Boots' Mule Menu
We've been working on a new drink menu here at the Boot, and we've come up with some pretty tasty creations for you to try the next time you come in for the best BBQ in Des Moines. We've got one portion of the menu dedicated to our own amazing versions of the Moscow Mule.

  • Pink Mule - made with Belvedere Pink Grapefruit Vodka
  • Kentucky Mule - made with Bulleit 95 Bourbon

7 Foods To Put You In The Mood For Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is coming Tuesday, February 14, 2017. Have you decided what to get for your sweetheart? Dinner at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is a great way to start a romantic evening! Some of the menu items at the best BBQ restaurant in Des Moines contain ingredients which are considered aphrodisiacs. Like we said, a great way to start your Valentine's Day!

An aphrodisiac is a food or drink that arouses desire. This is most often due to the natural chemicals found in those particular foods and the way that they react with your body. Science says this is a real thing. You can choose to believe it or not, but regardless, you're going to get a delicious meal.

Celery
Believe it or not, this low calorie food that is served along with our Wobbly Wings is actually considered an aphrodisiac. It's known to be a libido booster, it stimulates the pituitary gland, and it contains the chemical "androsterone" which is a potent pheromone. Don't leave this green on the plate!

Chili Peppers

Spicy chili peppers stimulate the production of your brain's feel-good chemicals, known as endorphins. They get your heart pumping and blood flowing, much like the rush of first love does. The increased blood flow can even bring an attractive blush to your skin and fullness to your lips. The Boot's Chipotle Buffalo Wings can make this happen, and you can even have that spicy wing sauce added to our Buffalo Chicken Strip Wrap.

Garlic

Once again, an ingredient related to our hot wings is on the aphrodisiac list. Garlic contains allicin, which is a chemical that increases blood flow. That can give a body improved stamina and extra energy. Our Jalapeno Garlic Wings are just what you need, but be sure to have a pocketful of breath mints to go along with them.

Avocados
Youthful vigor and increased energy is a side effect of the high levels of vitamin E found in avocados. This particular food has had a reputation for keeping the spark alive since the time of the ancient Aztecs. You can find this tasty treat in our Cowboy Cobb (aka- the King of Salads) and on the Turkey Avocado Wrap.

Artichokes

The next food on the list is another one packed with vitamins and antioxidants that enhance proper body function and blood flow. Our Spinach & Artichoke Dip is an excellent appetizer, or you can make a meal out of our Spin-Art-Chicken Flatbread.

Red Wine
In moderation, red wine is a wonderful thing for increasing blood flow, plus it relaxes you and can lower inhibitions. A few ounces along with your dinner and an inspired romantic toast, and your Valentine will be all smiles.

BBQ Sauce

Technically, our housemade BBQ sauce is not on any official aphrodisiac lists, but we beg to differ. The flavor of it topping our savory hickory-smoked meats is simply irresistible. When you or your sweetheart get a little on the sides of your mouth, you can lovingly wipe it off for them. A great excuse to get a little closer.

Valentine's Day Special
This Valentine's Day, join us at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse for lunch, dinner, or even Happy Hour. We will have our incredible Smoked Prime Rib available (usually reserved for weekends only,) plus if you order 2 entrees, we'll give you a dessert to share for FREE!

You and your valentine will feel at ease and have the chance to enjoy some delicious food and drinks together at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant. We'll save some seats for you!

What'll You Have To Drink With Your BBQ?

The first great decision you can make the next time you are hungry is to join us and dine on the best BBQ in Des Moines. Eventually, you will have to decide which item you will enjoy on that trip from our immense Wobbly Boots Roadhouse menu. In between those two decisions, we're going to ask you "What'll you have to drink?"

If you prefer your beverages without alcohol, we've got plenty of excellent choices to keep your thirst quenched. If, on the other hand, you're ready for a cocktail when you sit down to dinner, we've got the best bar in the Des Moines area for mixing up an incredible drink! There are a variety of libations for you to pick from, but the following beverages are some pretty popular choices.

Long Island Tea
Mixed correctly, this cocktail tastes tame, but in reality it packs quite a punch! Five different spirits combined with a bit of sweet & sour plus a dash of cola mixes in a way that tastes like a refreshing glass of iced tea, but with an added kick.

Margarita
Some people consider this more of a summer drink, but once you've tasted the amazing flavor, you won't care what time of year you're ordering this one. Sweet & sour is an ingredient in this cocktail too, but this time we mix it with tequila and a little triple sec. Salt the rim, toss a lime on it, and you're ready to go.

Cuba Libra
Ordering this one sounds fancy, but we've got a little secret for you. In reality, this is simply a Rum & Coke. What makes it a Cuba Libra? The addition of...
a slice of lime! Yep, that's it. Interestingly, that little bit of citrus does add a lot of flavor.

Tequila Sunrise
Tequila is the star of another popular drink here, but this time it's mixed with a healthy helping of orange juice. The "sunrise" comes in when the bartender adds just enough grenadine to make the cocktail appear as if a beautiful sunrise is taking place inside your glass.

Screwdriver
If you like orange juice but really aren't into tequila, then this may be more up your alley. Vodka is the spirit in this cocktail that gives you a dose of vitamin C with that little added kick.

Gimlet
Some of the best, classic cocktails don't take a lot to make. All it takes for a Gimlet is either gin or vodka, plus lime juice and ice. Easy to make, and delicious to drink.

Martini
Speaking of a classic, the martini is known wherever you go. It has also had many variations made of it over the years, including some unbelievable flavors. If you want to stay old-school, your martini will be made with either gin or vodka and a dash of vermouth, all shaken furiously in a tin with ice until it comes out cold and refreshing.

Moscow Mule
This is a specialty cocktail that we love making at the Boot. Sure, it tastes great, but that awesome copper mug that it is served in makes it extra cool (in more ways than one!) Inside that mug, we mix vodka, lime, and ginger beer.

Iowa Beer
While technically not a mixed drink, we can't resist mentioning our incredible selection of 18 draft beers, many of which are brewed right here in the good ol' state of Iowa. These change occasionally, depending on the season, but you can expect to see the following local brewing companies on our taps: Confluence, Exile, Peace Tree, and Boone Valley.

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, Des Moines, Clive IA, BBQ, cockatils

Like we mentioned earlier, we have lots of non-alcoholic choices for you to choose from too. These include:

  • Pepsi & Diet Pepsi
  • Dr. Pepper & Diet Dr. Pepper
  • Mountain Dew & Diet Mountain Dew
  • Mug Root Beer
  • Sierra Mist Natural
  • Crush Orange Soda
  • Tropicana Lemonade
  • Raspberry Brisk Iced Tea
  • Fresh Brewed Sweet Tea, Unsweetened Tea, & Peach Tea
  • Hot Coffee, Decaf Coffee, & Tea

So... what'll you have?
Our mouthwatering, hickory-smoked BBQ will satisfy any hunger you bring in with you, and our delicious drinks will quench the thirst that you work up eating it! Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is a great place to bring the gang for a delicious afternoon or evening out. You'll have an amazing time while you are here, and you'll leave looking forward to coming back for more!

We talk a lot about our amazing, mouth-watering, hickory-smoked BBQ, but we've also got the best bar in Des Moines right here, ready to mix up delicious drinks to go along with your fantastic meal. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse in Clive features a full bar, and our talented bartenders know how to make the best-tasting drinks to complement that incredible BBQ flavor.

From simple to extravagant, we're ready to mix up all of your favorite cocktails. If it's new to us, tell us what's in it, and if we've got the right stuff to make it, we'll give it a try. If you don't already have a favorite drink, here are a few tried-and-true classics that always taste just right.

Long Island Tea

A delicious cocktail that tastes tame, but packs quite a punch. A mixture of 5 different spirits along with a dash of mixer brings this favorite drink to life. It's like enjoying a cool glass of iced tea, but with an extra, yummy kick.

Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a refreshing specialty cocktail made from vodka, lime, and ginger beer. The part that makes it extra special is the fact that it is served in a copper mug to keep it at the perfect, ice-cold temperature that brings out those amazing flavors. The Wobbly Boots Roadhouse drink menu offers a few yummy variations on the original recipe too.

Bloody Mary

This drink isn't just for Sunday brunches (although it is perfect for that!) A rich and tasty Bloody Mary is a wonderful drink to stand alongside the bold, hearty flavors of our incredible BBQ. As an added bonus, you're getting some of your daily vegetable serving in while you drink. (Wait, isn't a tomato a fruit...)

Margarita

It's always a good time for a margarita, and they are especially tasty in the summer when it's hot outside. Either frozen or on the rocks, it tastes great with everything on our menu. If it seems strange to you to drink this tequila cocktail without eating Mexican food, ease your guilt by having one with our BBQ Pork Nachos.

Beer

While our bartenders don't have to mix anything to hand this ice-cold, refreshment, we simply couldn't leave beer off of our list. When you walk into Wobbly Boots Roadhouse and see those glorious 18 taps featuring all of the varieties of draft beer that we have available, not to mention the wide array of bottles we carry too, you're immediately thirsty for one. We even feature many local Iowa breweries in our selection.

While it's all about BBQ here at the Boot, our mixed drinks and beer selections are pretty incredible too. The best BBQ in Des Moines always tastes a little bit better when you have something delicious to wash it down with. Head on over to Wobbly Boots Roadhouse soon and tell our 'tenders what you'll have to drink. The Intriguing History of Happy Hour

Happy Hour is a popular time of day at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant. It's a wonderful way to relax after a long day at work before heading home to all of life's responsibilities awaiting you there. Wobbly Boots Roadhouse is a great gathering place to meet old friends, and make new friends, in that time between work and home.

Oddly, Happy "Hour" is generally made up of a few hours worth of time, but we guess adding the "s" makes it sound kind of weird. The best Happy Hour in the Des Moines area happens right here every Monday through Friday from 3-6 pm. That's 3 full hours of great beer and mixed drink specials, plus our tasty appetizers to enjoy along with those drinks.

In the Navy...

The crew aboard the USS Arkansas created something similar in 1913. They would schedule regular periods of entertainment to keep everyone in good spirits. The crew referred to these scheduled distractions as "Happy Hours." Various forms of entertainment happened during these, including boxing, wrestling, music, dancing, and movies. By the end of World War I, the entire United States Navy had picked up the practice.

Secret Speakeasies

Prohibition brought along with it the next form of Happy Hour. Alcohol was illegal during this time, but that didn't mean that people had stopped drinking it. Many chose to meet up at a local speakeasy or each other's homes to enjoy a few secret cocktails before heading out to a restaurant where alcohol was not allowed. This practice of enjoying a few cocktails before dinner is much closer to what today's Happy Hour has turned into.

The Best Happy Hour in Des Moines

If you are in the Des Moines area, you've got five chances every week to enjoy our Wobbly Boots Roadhouse Happy Hour. Stop by, pull up a bar stool, and enjoy a few hours out of your day to relax and socialize. We offer a fully-stocked bar, great mixed cocktails, ice cold bottles of beer, and 18 delicious beer varieties on tap. You will even find a lot of your favorite local brews behind our bar.

You may be having such a great time, you'll want to extend your Happy Hour into a dinner with the best BBQ in Des Moines. No matter what time of day that you join us, our friendly staff will do their best to make sure that the hours that you spend at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse are all happy ones.

Local Brew on Tap: Firetrucker Brewery

We know for a fact that we have the best beer in Des Moines due to the fact that we carry a nice variety of Iowa-made brews on tap. Among these local beers, we are thrilled to offer Firetrucker Brewery. This incredible brewery helps to make Wobbly Boots Roadhouse's draft beer selection the best in town.

photo from www.Firetrucker.com

We aren't the only ones that think Firetrucker is pretty amazing. According to Yahoo Travel and Untappd, they are the #1 brewery in Iowa! This is most likely due to the care and love that they put into every beer they create. Firetrucker sees beer as two things: beer is art, and beer is awesome! (No wonder we love them so much.)

The Art of Beer

A sense of innovation, a sense of community, and the desire to improve life is at the forefront during the creation of every Firetrucker beer. It brings people together, allowing them to take the time to enjoy the simple, yet finer, things in life. All of these brews are loaded with flavor while maintaining a clean finish. From their everyday offerings to the monthly seasonal beers, you will not be disappointed.

Local Love

These guys live, breathe, and eat local. They show their appreciation for the community support they receive by supporting their community. Local ingredients are always used, and they support central Iowa by getting involved with local charity and community events.

The next time you are thirsty for a hearty Iowa beer, stop by and visit us at the best bar in Des Moines. Catch All of the March Madness Games at the Boot!

March Madness is almost here, so start thinking about those brackets! Wobbly Boots Roadhouse will have all of the 2016 NCAA tournament games playing for you, right up until this year's title game.

Our BBQ restaurant is the best place to watch sports in Des Moines. With 17 televisions strategically placed around the room, you can catch all of the March Madness excitement. We will be showing all of the action from Selection Sunday on March 13 through the men's championship game on April 4 & the women's championship game on April 5.

The road to the Final Four begins with Selection Sunday. This is when the NCAA basketball committees reveal this year's tournament field with college basketball's best teams. This year the show has been lengthened to 2 hours, from 4:30-6:30 pm. It will include lots of detailed analysis, discussion, interviews, and even reactions from the teams as the tournament bracket is filled in. A must see for college basketball fans!

The games that make up the March Madness tournament will be broadcast across 4 national television networks: TBS, CBS, TNT, and truTV. The "play-in" games will take place March 15-16, and once all of the teams are set, the tournament gets going on St. Patrick's Day, March 17 at 11:00 am.

The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament began in 1939 with Oregon beating Ohio State 46-33 for the championship. For the first 12 years, only 8 teams were invited to participate. This size grew until today's 65-team tournament setup was formed in 2001.

The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball tournament didn't begin until 1982. It started with 32 teams and expanded to 64 teams before the 1994 season. Their championship game is always played the day after the men's championship game and ends the college basketball season.

The best way to make sure you have access to all of the games is to plan on watching them at our Des Moines BBQ restaurant alongside us! You will find all of the games, as well as some incredible basketball fans to watch them with, right here at Wobbly Boots Roadhouse.

An Iowa Favorite - Peace Tree Brewing Co.

The best bar near Des Moines loves to feature Iowa breweries in our selection of 18 beers on tap.  One of these home-state selections is Peace Tree Brewing Co. out of Knoxville, Iowa.  Wobbly Boots BBQ would like to introduce you to the handcrafted, full-flavored brewhouse that is very passionate about what they create.

Their name, Peace Tree, comes from the historic grand sycamore that grew near the town of Red Rock.  Today, that town is covered by Lake Red Rock.  In the 1960's, Red Rock Dam was built, surrounding the then 500 year old tree.  Ever since that time the Peace Tree has been nobly rising out of those waters.

Originally the Peace Tree was a meeting place for many generations of Native Americans, and later became a meeting place for fur traders as well.  Treaties were negotiated here, and some say that it marks the Red Rock line.  Drawing from this past tradition, the Peace Tree Brewing Co. hopes that the beer made under the Peace Tree label will, "be shared with friends and strangers alike and act as a catalyst for conversations, new friendships and important agreements – in line with the lore of the Peace Tree of Red Rock."

A former Nash Rambler car dealership has been the home of Peace Tree Brewing Co. since 2009.  Within a month of their March, 2010 grand opening, they were producing and bottling their very own beers and hand-delivering them all over Iowa.  Today they have doubled in size and production, and even branched out into Nebraska.

The names of their beers come from memories and places in their past that have special meaning, along with special places in the community and our great state of Iowa.  The following three can be found all over the state year-round.

Blonde Fatale

This Belgian-style Blonde Ale is surprisingly smooth.  It is hopped with Styrian Golding and Celeia, giving it a medium aroma with a crisp, refreshing bite.  Hints of a fruity complexity come from the Belgian yeast.  It is 8.5% ABV.

Red Rambler

The deep red color and malty flavor of this beer is a popular one in the tap room.  It is named in honor of the Nash Rambler car dealership that used to inhabit the building.  Three varieties of hops balance out the malt character of this 5.8% ABV brew.

No Coast IPA

Loads of hop flavor and tons of bitterness describe this big American IPA.  Amarillo, Citra, and Simcoe hops are present with big piney and citrus notes.  Its golden color comes from the variety of pale malts that are used to make it.  It is 7.25% ABV.

Peace Tree Brewing Co. currently has 11 other varieties listed on their taproom website, including some delicious seasonal choices.  Stop in to your favorite BBQ restaurant near Des Moines and see which of these incredible beers that we are featuring this month.  Nothing goes better with Wobbly Boots BBQ and Iowa football than a good ol' Iowa-brewed beer!
