Where Did The Hot Wing Come From? Find Out Here!

One of the most popular menu items at our BBQ restaurant in Des Moines happens to be the Wobbly Wings. That's not surprising, because wings are a popular item most places you go, but our hickory-smoked goodness puts ours a step above the rest! Did you know that this delicious appetizer has only been around just over 50 years? Wobbly Boots Roadhouse did a little digging and found a few interesting things to share with you about this tasty treat.

Conflicting Histories of the Hot Wing
As is the case with most legendary tales, the origin of today's hot wing is a bit cloudy. One fact is for sure. They were first introduced in Buffalo, New York in 1964, hence the popular name "buffalo wings." In the 1960's, the chicken wing was considered the least desirable part of the bird, and if it wasn't automatically thrown in the trash, it was generally only used for stock. The rest of the history is up for debate.

  • The most popular origin stories revolve around Teressa Bellissimo, a Buffalo, New York restaurant owner. One account chalks the appetizer creation up to a mistake. She and her husband Frank were expecting a delivery of necks, which they used to make spaghetti sauce for their establishment, the Anchor Bar. Frank convinced her to get creative rather than waste the shipment. Teressa chose to deep-fry the naked wings, toss them in some hot sauce, and serve them up with bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks.
  • Their son, Dominic, remembers the story a little differently. He says that his mother created the wings after he asked her to make up something special late on a Friday night. Most of their customers were Catholic and weren't eating meat on Fridays. Since they had been spending lots of money in the bar that evening, Dominic wanted to offer them a special treat at midnight as a thank you for their patronage.
  • One last twist on this particular tale was that Teressa came up with her amazing wings one night when Dominic and his friends from college came in hungry. The one thing that all of these stories has in common is Teressa and her creative use of a throw-away meat.
  • There is one story that does not involve Mrs. Bellissimo. John Young says that he grew up eating chicken wings, and he created a special "Mambo Sauce" to go with them. His wings were breaded before they were deep-fried, and the drummies and flats were not separated before cooking. He registered the name of his restaurant, Wings 'n' Things, in the mid-60's before he left Buffalo in 1970.

The Boot's Very Own Wobbly Wings
Regardless of the true origin, the appetizer gained popularity throughout the 1970's, first in Buffalo, then across the entire state of New York. Today, it's rare to find a restaurant in the country that doesn't serve some version of this incredible food.

Our family restaurant in Des Moines takes pride in our of version of this classic. First, we coat jumbo chicken wings in a very special house dry rub, and then we slow roast them over hickory. This ensures that you end up with the most flavorful, juiciest wings possible.

Now, if we only served them up plain, we don't believe there would be a complaint in the house. They are incredible on their own! We couldn't stop there, though. In addition to our "naked" smoked wings, you can also order them covered in one of five unbelievable wing sauces.
  • Teriyaki
    • Our own house made sweet & sticky glaze... DELICIOUS!!!
  • Hot Dijon Sauce
    • A little hot mustard + buffalo sauce + some sweet = Delish!
  • Jalapeno Garlic
    • Minced jalapenos combined with garlic in a butter sauce... Great Flavor Mix!
  • Chipotle Buffalo
    • Buffalo sauce infused with chipotle peppers making a buttery, smoky buffalo sauce.
  • Bar-B-Que
    • Our own homemade in-house BBQ sauce, a perfect addition to any wing!

10 Cool Thanksgiving Fun Facts To Impress Your Friends

Thanksgiving has been celebrated in the United States for nearly 400 years. What started as a feast between a few people has turned into a holiday celebrated by millions of Americans. Being a family friendly restaurant in Des Moines, we obviously love any holiday mainly revolving around food. This one even has the added bonus of a day full of football too.
Wobbly Boots Roadhouse has pulled together a few interesting facts about Thanksgiving for you. Whip a few of these out at the dinner table and impress your family and friends with your extensive holiday knowledge!

#1
The first Thanksgiving took place in 1921 between the pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe, and it lasted for 3 days. Today, we tend to eat for about an hour, take a nap, wake up and have a snack, and then spend the days after our Thanksgiving searching for Christmas shopping bargains!

#2
Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until 1863. After years and years of letters from Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor best known for writing "Mary Had A Little Lamb," Abraham Lincoln was finally convinced to make the holiday official.

#3
President Lincoln placed Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in November, but it moved for a couple of years. In 1939, President Roosevelt thought it would be a good idea to move it up a week to the 3rd Thursday in November. This was meant to lengthen the shopping season and boost the Depression-era economy. It didn't quite catch on, and after 2 years it was changed back to the original week.

#4
Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to his daughter expressing his feelings about the popular Thanksgiving bird. In this letter, he wrote about how he wished the bald eagle had not been chosen to represent the country because it was a bird of "bad moral character." In his opinion, the turkey is a much more "respectable bird." If the turkey had been chosen as our national bird, would we still eat it every Thanksgiving?

#5
Swanson ended up with tons of extra frozen turkeys in 1953 after the Thanksgiving holiday. Some brilliant person proposed that they package the leftover birds along with a few tasty sides in an aluminum tray. From that idea, the first TV dinner was born.

#6
If Thanksgiving is your favorite holiday, you can make plans next year to celebrate it twice! Canada also observes Thanksgiving, but they hold it on the 2nd Monday in October. Take an early trip up north and hit both holidays.

#7
If simply eating turkey isn't enough for you, you can live in Turkey and not even have to leave the U.S.A. Your choices include: Turkey, Texas; Turkey, North Carolina; Turkey Creek, Louisiana; and Turkey Creek, Arizona.

#8
The original Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924 included the store's employees in vibrant costumes, floats, bands, and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. Today, you won't see zoo animals marching down the street, but you will see lots of gigantic character balloons.

#9
Football has become as much a Thanksgiving tradition as turkey and stuffing. In 1882, the Intercollegiate Football Association decided to hold an annual collegiate championship game in New York City on Thanksgiving Day. Many college teams built some famous holiday rivalry games around this holiday.

#10
The NFL started holding Thanksgiving Day games in 1920. Today, there are always 3 big games held on the holiday. One game always features the Detroit Lions, another always includes the Dallas Cowboys, and the teams for the third game change every year.

This year, our beloved Iowa Hawkeyes will be taking on the Cornhuskers the day after Thanksgiving. Joining us at the best place to watch sports in Des Moines is way more fun than fighting the Black Friday crowds! The fun will continue on Saturday as the Iowa State Cyclones host West Virginia. With 17 TVs placed all around the restaurant, there's not a bad seat in the house.

Wobbly Boots Roadhouse will have our incredible football specials available for every game over the holiday. These include $3 Tall Boys from the bar and many of our delicious appetizers priced at only $5! If you didn't bring home enough leftovers from Thanksgiving to satisfy your turkey cravings, we've also got the best smoked turkey in Iowa waiting here for you. Have an incredible Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends, then head on over to the Boot to spend a weekend full of food, football, and fun right here with us.

Big Loaded Baker
Wobbly Boots Roadhouse, Clive IA, Des Moines, BBQWhile a baked potato may not sound like a full meal at first, it definitely is when we get done with it! We take a full 1-pound baked potato and load it with cheddar-jack cheese, bacon crumbles, and green onions. Once that's done, you get to choose any of our smoked meats (pulled pork, ham, turkey breast, brisket, sausage, or burnt ends) to be piled up on top of it. The final flavorful touch is a topping of our amazing house BBQ sauce. We're nearly full just imagining it!

Baked Potato Soup
This rich and creamy soup if full of chunks of potatoes and bacon, all garnished with cheddar-jack cheese, crumbled bacon, and green onions. It's so mouth-watering, we have it on the menu every day of the week!

Soup of the Day
This is where we let our chef take the reins and surprise us with whatever tasty soup he feels like preparing. While the flavor changes, you always know that it will be full of savory ingredients and made from scratch.

Sandwich/Soup/Salad Combos
For those of you that prefer a bit of variety on your plate, we offer a few different combinations. You can choose between one of two sandwiches served on golden toasted sourdough - Ham & Swiss or Turkey & Swiss - and then pick a bowl of soup or a crisp garden salad to enjoy alongside it. We'll even let you skip the sandwich and have the soup with the salad instead. Tell us how you want it, and we'll make it happen!

The staff (Brian and Abby) were outstanding!! It was whatever we needed, whenever we needed it. You can run your own video on one of their big screens and watch whichever games you want. Oh, and the food, everyone raved about it. I can't wait until the next celebration because I am doing it at Wobbly Boots!"

"When in Des Moines we typically stay at a hotel near Wobbly Boots. We've seen the restaurant many times but finally had the chance to try it. We were not disappointed and will definitely make a stop here again. With 5 of us eating, not one was disappointed. Everything had great flavor. We had a burger, burnt ends, chicken strips, open faced beef with gravy and a french dip. The cheesy corn was yummy. We'll be back!"

"In town for one night and staying across the street at the Sheraton. Was looking for a good salad and popped in. I decided on the grilled chicken salad. I was amazed when it arrived. The portion was huge. Also, the bartender was extremely nice and attentive. He offered refills and checked on me two or three times. Very good customer service, which was much appreciated."
~Paul L, Yelp review

"Good clean atmosphere. GREAT FOOD, polite staff...only down side is I could not go again before I had to leave."

"Great atmosphere for a BBQ/ American food restaurant. Good selection of local beers. BBQ brisket is tender and flavorful. The BBQ beans are the BEST in Des Moines! Will go back again!!"
~Patrick A, Yelp review

"As a Brit abroad, this was my first experience of a BBQ restaurant. The greeting was friendly, the service excellent and the food fantastic- there were three of us eating and we all thoroughly enjoyed our menu choices. To me, burnt ends sounded like an unpleasant medical emergency - the reality was delicious pieces of BBQ beef. I'm really looking forward to my next visit."
~David H, TripAdvisor review

"Great food and a relaxed atmosphere, even with an Iowa football game on. Very pleasant wait staff who were always attentive. For a BBQ food place it was not drowned in sauce. You still had the full flavor of the smoked meat. Absolutely loved it."
~Don Poush, Facebook review

"Had the Ribbies and Wings appetizer and a salad. Huge portions! Ribs were good but the wings were awesome! Probably the best BBQ wings I've ever had - Big, meaty and full of flavor."
